“Mommy, why are you dancing like that??”
“Hurry, hurry, hurry….open the door for mommy, please. I need to GO!”
“Sorry, sweetie…I need to go home and change my clothes. Again.”
These are just a few things that have been heard in our family over the past six+ years since my first daughter entered the world. Her delivery was a bit complicated with lots of tears (both kinds) and stitches and other fun postpartum challenges. The result was a daughter who brings me so much joy and makes me belly laugh at times, and along with that, a lot of accidents and what I like to call “the mommy pee-pee dance”. You know what I mean, that little dance that four year olds do when they’re newly potty trained and wait until the very last minute to use the restroom. The back and forth, stepping from foot to foot, all the while stating they don’t really need to go. The only difference is my more developed brain knows I full-well need to go and the consequences that will come if I don’t go NOW. Thanks to those muscles losing their strength, if I have to go, it’s going to happen, whether there’s a toilet nearby or not.
Enter Kegels. Those pelvic floor exercises that you can take with you anywhere, no weights required. The ones the doctors suggest you do throughout the day, so you set reminders for yourself to do your Kegels at one-hour intervals and feel good about all that exercise you got in for the day. NOT.
If you’re like me, remembering to do Kegel exercises is right up there with remembering to drink eight glasses a day…not happening. I’m three kids deep and work from home, so I’m lucky if my kids are just fed and still alive by the end of the day. On a scale of 1-10 of where Kegels fall on my radar throughout the day, I’m pulling about a -1. Unless of course I’m doing the dance…then I’m “Darn you, Kegels!! Where are you?!?”
So when I was offered a chance to participate in an 8-week challenge to monitor my Kegels and potentially decrease my need for the mommy pee-pee dance, I was all about it. The creators of this Pericoach have found a way for your muscles “down there” to talk to your phone. And since I spend more time on my phone then I do worrying about my Kegels, I figured this is right up my alley.
So for the next eight weeks, the better part of summer 2017, I’ll be squeezing and monitoring and reporting, with hopefully a lot of clean belly laughs and dance parties in between.
Stay tuned!
