We are all born scientists. Moms know this. Babies and children are naturally curious about the world around them. And that curiosity is a gift for those of us who raise or teach kids. The way they see the world helps us to look at the world anew. We observe more. We think like scientists. Science is everywhere – your body, cars, nature, technology, food, medicine – every aspect of our lives is filled with science. And Club SciKidz‘s camps can help harness our kids’ natural curiosity and foster their love of science.
My kids and I spend a lot of time thinking like scientists together. On a recent winter morning, my son and I were talking about the frost on the windshield of my car. He was worried we would be late to school because I couldn’t see through the window. I told him to watch the frost and I turned up the heater and backed the car into a sunnier spot in the driveway. The frost quickly melted away. He said, “Oh cool! We used the sun as a heat source to melt the ice into water. We learned about that at school.” I love that he feels so excited about science, and I’m sure he is going to love science camp.
Skills learned at science camp overlap with so much of what our kids are learning and observing in the world every day. My son is obsessed with Minecraft and I’m so excited for him to try something like the Adventures in Minecraft Game Design camp from Club SciKidz. My daughter has been telling everyone she wants to be an engineer and Little Engineer camp seems like it was made for her. Coding is the new literacy of the digital age. It’s exciting to know that our kids can start learning to code in a fun way through Club SciKidz camps like the Minecraft themed one as well as their other game design camps.
Science camps from programs like Club SciKidz help students engage in observation, measurement, identification of properties, and experimentation involving life, earth, and physical science concepts. The units offered by Club SciKidz are rigorously researched by science educators with the help of teachers and children which results in lessons students enjoy and genuinely learn from. The camps are age-specific (pre-K through Kindergarten, 1st through 3rdgrade, and 4th through 7thgrade).
Club SciKidz’s science day camps and school programs have been attended by more than 50,000 children since 1997. Club SciKidz offers dozens of themed science camps with franchises in Georgia, Maryland and Texas, with multiple locations in the Dallas area.
Problem solving using the scientific method is so relevant to the real world, whether we want to defrost a windshield or grow a vegetable garden or write code. The scientific method is applicable to all careers and job fields so learning to problem solve using science is sure to benefit young people for life.
Science is everywhere and Club SciKidz is committed to demonstrating how science works in the real world by providing camps that teach skills which overlap with all other facets of life – asking why, investigation, creativity, perseverance, communication, etc. Research has shown that kids form interests in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) skills and careers as early as elementary school age.
Club SciKidz’s 2019 Summer Camp season is going to offer 24 themed summer day camps so there’s sure to be something for everyone – from Jurassic for your dino-obsessed kindergartener to Sea Adventures for your future marine biologist 2nd grader to Advanced Robotics with LEGO EV3 for your 7th grader who wants to work for NASA someday.
