After changing Halle’s crib sheets the other day, I realized how soon it will be when we have to lower the crib! I can’t believe it. So, before the bedding is all messed up due to the lower level, I took the opportunity to take some pics of Halle’s nursery for our second installment of Nursery Tours. Enjoy!

Room Size: 12 x 14
What was your inspiration for this room? Gabe and I were on a trip to Guatamala and I saw some little folk art animals sold on the street. I wasn’t pregnant at the time, but I bought them and told Gabe those would be the start of a future nursery. I knew I would go with bright colors.
What did you do first to the room? Where did you start? It’s so funny how grand my ideas were in the beginning. I actually had a professional painter come and price what it would be to faux paint the room in a rustic turquoise….then, after seeing the price, I realized I liked the khaki that was already up!! So since we didn’t end up painting much (just half of a wall and the detail around the closet and bathroom doors) I started by shopping around for furniture and sewing her name which hangs above her crib.
What is one thing you are most proud of in this room? I am glad that she has so many things that have been passed down to her, such as a quilt and afghan from my great-grandmother and a handmade doll cradle that was mine as a child. As far as being proud of something that I did, I would have to say the painting opposite the crib. My mom and I bought a greeting card in Santa Fe that we liked then my dad sketched it onto the canvas- he even replaced two horses with the giraffe and lion!- then my mom and I painted it. It’s not spectacular but I think it’s so cute and very special. I also must say, I love the 3 paper stars above the changing table. Halle’s eyes light up when I turn them on!
What was one of the biggest challenges you faced while decorating? I had a certain idea in my mind of what I wanted the room to look like. Well, “bright” and “folk art” aren’t things you see in nurseries so I looked everywhere for bedding and decor. So I decided to just look for fabric and have the bedding made. It really helped set the tone for the rest of the room. It’s also hard to stop decorating! Her room is a work in progress and I’m not sure I’ll ever have that feeling of being finished with it. There are still little projects (like curtains!) that I need to get to.
Were you working with a budget when designing the room? If so, would you mind sharing what it was? We didn’t really have a set budget for the room but I knew I had to make smart decisions. I splurged on the custom bedding so I tried to make up for it with the Ikea rocker, a Craigslist changing table and using a wicker shelf that was in my nursery as a baby!
Love it! You did an amazing job!
Thanks! I think it fits her little spunky personality!
