For low-risk pregnancies, you have the option of choosing a midwife for your care. The basic philosophy of a midwife is that childbirth is a natural, normal event until proven otherwise, at which point you’ll work together to seek higher-level intervention.
Here are the midwife credentials you’ll want to know:
- Certified nurse-midwife (CNM) – has at least a bachelor’s degree, with additional training in nursing and midwifery, and has taken exams to become certified.
- Certified midwife (CM) – has the same qualifications as CNMs but are not registered nurses.
- Certified professional midwife (CPM) – certified by the North American Registry of Midwives after passing practical and written examinations. Out-of-hospital experience is required for certification.
- Direct-entry midwife – may or may not have college degrees or certifications. They trained through apprenticeship, workshops, and/or formal instruction.
- Licensed Midwife (LM) – licensed to practice midwifery in a specific state, although not all states recognize LM and may require further certification.
- Other credentials you’ll see below: MSN (Master of Science in Nursing), DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice), APRN (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse), RN (Registered Nurse)
No matter where you deliver, make sure you are getting the care YOU need, not just baby. Enlist your partner or support person to help you advocate.
