Looking up hospital reviews online is kind of treacherous. Because who loves a hospital, really. For maternity care and childbirth, here are some of the main factors to consider:
- Does your doctor have admitting privileges at this facility? Try to find an OB or midwife you like who also delivers at the hospital you like.
- How open is the hospital to your birth plan? (Unmedicated, water births, VBAC, immediate skin-to-skin, etc.) Side note: At the time of publishing, the only hospital that permits water births in Dallas or Collin County is Presby Dallas.
- What level of neonatal care can they provide? (Nurseries are ranked Level I–IV, with Level IV capable of providing the highest, most acute level of care for your baby in the event of complications.)
We’re pretty lucky in Dallas—the major hospitals here share many of the same features when it comes to Labor & Delivery. Hotel-style private rooms, advanced security, multiple pain management options, moms and babies rooming together—these kinds of things are very standard now.
I encourage you to check out each hospital’s Labor & Delivery pages. We’ve added the basics here, but the individual hospital sites are very informative, of course.
No matter where you deliver, make sure you are getting the care YOU need, not just baby. Enlist your partner or support person to help you advocate.
