At Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas, they are all about mothers and babies. For 17 years, they have safely connected mothers with excess breastmilk to fragile infants in North Texas NICUs and for outpatient babies at home. Donors are screened and milk is pasteurized to exceed rigorous safety compliance measures. The immunological properties of donor milk prevent complications and enhance survivability for the babies who need it most.

As a nonprofit with expertise in breastfeeding, it is extremely important to also help mothers in the community. Breastfeeding can be challenging which is why Mother’s Milk Bank has enhanced their mission to include a free breastfeeding support program managed by our staff lactation consultant. I remember going into my first appointment when I was pregnant with my firstborn excited and a little nervous.  Excited to hear the first teeny heartbeats, but nervous that there could potentially be something wrong.  Thankfully within seconds the ultrasound technician easily found a heartbeat, however she continued to nervously zoom in on one spot on the little screen.  I knew there was something wrong…

Apparently my mom told me stories of her “difficult” pregnancies before I was expecting my first, but I don’t remember that at all. Mom was really sick, and lost a lot of weight, and couldn’t keep working. I have a new appreciation for her pain now that I have (barely) survived hyperemesis gravidarum during all three of my pregnancies…

As my husband and I watched our baby moving on the sonogram screen before us, hearing the familiar fluttering that filled the darkened room, we found it nearly impossible to digest what the specialist had just told us. “I advise that you terminate this pregnancy.”
