I was the epitome of a picky eater as a child. Luckily my mother is Italian because pretty much the only thing I would eat is pasta and the occasional chicken nugget.
One thing my mom did was instill the importance of me taking vitamins to make sure I wasn’t missing out on any important nutrients. Even though my daughter, Evelyn, is a fantastic eater (her favorite snacks are carrots and celery) I have kept up with the tradition of a daily vitamins because some days she will go with only eating those two items.
I’ve never really put much thought into what brand I purchased, eventually Evelyn always selected the gummy Princess ones. I was recently introduced to alternaVites Kids, and we were both intrigued and a bit wary of something other than the traditional vitamin.
To be honest, I thought a vitamin was a vitamin. After reading about some of the advantages of alternaVites Kids though, I realized that not all vitamins are created the same. I loved that it contains zero grams of sugar and is free of aspartame, high fructose corn syrup and has no artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors or preservatives. Evelyn’s princesses might be sweet but they certainly can not claim the same thing.
With kids though, sometimes you have to weigh the negatives against the positives and if your kid won’t eat vitamins unless they are a special shape-well it is worth it. So I was curious to see what Evelyn would think of her new vitamins.
I opened the packet and asked her if she wanted to eat it from a spoon or pour it directly into her mouth and she immediately started to pour it in.
Her response? “It is sugary like candy!”
I had to taste it for myself and was pleasantly surprised by the texture. I was thinking it would be pixie stick like, but in reality it was a much finer powder than candy powder and immediately melted on my tongue. The flavor was also exactly as it was described-Strawberry Bubblegum. There was no aftertaste or gritty powder remaining. I also appreciate that I didn’t have to worry that she would have any gummy parts left behind in her teeth.
While she could have enjoyed the entire packet as is, I asked her if she wanted to mix it into her smoothie. She was very excited to help “cook” her smoothie and add the remaining powder. She drank all of it, and I felt good knowing she had already had several servings of fruits, veggies and essential vitamins in just one sitting. Evelyn gave it a literal thumbs up.
