I love Dallas. From fantastic parks to free museums, there is always something for a young family to do. And from modeling to sports, which range from purely recreational to Olympic tier athletics, there’s always something for KIDS to do.
With three girls around my house [and one new little boy who doesn’t do much but lay around looking cute] I can tell you that there is a nonstop stream of drama AND complete renditions of every song in Disney’s Frozen. Every day. And even every night. Can someone say “creative outlet?” Well, folks, think I finally found the solution on how to wrap drama, singing, socialization and education into one well-rounded package: a play.
Since taking our girls to see both The Lion King and The Little Mermaid at the Dallas Music Hall they have both begun to express a love for theater and have even staged several plays around the house. So when the opportunity to audition for a play arose for my eldest, who is our social butterfly, I was very excited. Being able to be in a play AND receive 6 weeks of acting lessons? Count us in!

Here are the details:
What? A Spring Production Theater Workshop at the Aaron Family JCC (the J) featuring productions of both The Little Mermaid Jr. (ages 6-12) and Peter Pan Jr. (ages 10-18).
When? Auditions are March 16th from 1-5:00 for both plays. Audition results will be posted when they arrive for their first rehearsal on March 17th. (Note: Auditions are open to children of all faiths!)
Where? 7900 Northaven Road, Dallas, 75230 (near 75 & Royal)
How? Auditions begin at 1:00 and will last around two hours. Bring one song for your child to sing (they will probably only need to sing about one-half of a song) and some sort of way for their music to be played. [Sheet music, a smart phone with a song preloaded; they’re flexible. Hint: you can go to iTunes to download almost any song you could imagine in a karaoke version!]
The choreographer will then teach the children a very brief dance sequence for them to perform and they will be given a short script segment to read. [Auditioning children must be able to read.] Remember to bring your audition form which can be found here. Bring a snapshot of your child and make sure they wear comfortable shoes they can dance in [this means no open toed shoes or flip flops].
The Rest: The cost of the play and workshop is $325 for members and $375 for non-members.
Rehearsal for The Little Mermaid Jr. will begin Monday, March 17th from 5:00–6:30pm and will continue every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00–6:30pm until the performance.
Rehearsal for Peter Pan Jr. will begin Monday, March 17th from 6:30–8:00pm and will continue every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30–8:00pm until the performance. All of the parts assigned to children will be acting roles, but parents will have an opportunity of getting involved, too. From set design to ticket sales parents will be able to volunteer in many different area, giving them a chance to watch their children and take part in the fun!
The registration fee for the J is between $50-$150 per family, so if you have more than one child interested in auditioning or are interested in the many offerings [gymnastics, state of the art spinning, a yoga studio, preschool, and a kids club to name a few] a membership is definitely worth it!
