You have a baby! At a nightclub!

2

Last week, I took my baby clubbing.  What can I say?  I missed my younger days and the siren song of the nightclub, with its smoky darkness and heart-thumping music was too much to ignore.  So I strapped my baby in her carseat and we got our dance on.

Now, before you go calling CPS on me, it’s totally legit.  Have you ever heard of Baby Loves Disco?  I hadn’t, so when we were given the opportunity to check it out, we jumped.  Plus, it didn’t hurt that it was close to the house and we’d be home by dinnertime.  What, you didn’t think I *actually* took her out clubbing, did you?  Ha!  My eyes automatically close by 11pm these days.

I chatted with several members of the group when we arrived.  Baby Loves Disco was on a world tour!  I got to chat with Andy Hurwitz, who is the right hand man to Heather Murphy, BLD’s founder.  What started in a basement in Philadelphia is now a traveling event that sells out in almost every city they visit.  Area nightclubs open during the daytime, they’re rearranged to be baby-friendly, and everyone gets to come out and dance to great music that everyone can enjoy.  And I’m not talking about the ABC song.  Michael Jackson’s Pretty Young Thing, anyone?  How about some Party Rock in the house tonight?  What’s even better, local groups set up info tables at the club so parents can get connected with other baby- and kid-friendly activities in your city.

We got there early and they were ready for us

juice bags for the kids and if you are so inclined, cocktails for mom and dad. We are in a nightclub after all.
They even had kid-friendly snacks if you get hungry from all that dancing!

Soon enough, it was time to get the party started.  The MC got on the mic and called us all to the dance floor.  The music started, and it was time to dance!  Sofia and I bounced around to the music and she was clapping her hands and babbling excitedly, so I’m pretty sure she enjoyed herself too!

Please report to the dance floor
Sofia practiced standing by herself and even took a few steps! I'm sure it was the music that got her moving.

We danced for a little bit and then we walked around to check out the other groups that came to join the fun.  I talked with Michelle Chase with Wee Volunteer of Dallas.  They’re a non-profit group that encourages kids from 18 months to 13 years to get involved with community service activities in Dallas.  A mother that regularly participates with their group heard about BLD and it was a natural fit for them!

I also talked with Farrah Agado, of Stroller Strides of Grapevine.  After getting laid off a few years ago, Farrah was looking for another opportunity that would allow her to spend more time with her son and Stroller Strides was perfect for her.  It’s an hour-long fitness program that moms can do with their babies and it’s pretty much a no-brainer to combine fitness with dance!

It was really great to chat with the ladies, but Sofia was letting me know it was time to dance again.  Did I mention that Andy’s son was the DJ?  And that he’s 12?  How cool is that!

Rockin it out!

We danced for a few more songs, joining the other parents on the dance floor.  It’s such a great way to get active with your kids and meet other parents!  Baby Loves Disco has held events all over the country and they’re even international!  We had a great time and we’re so glad we got to participate.  Baby Loves Disco is currently on their world tour and while they’ve already made their Dallas stop, check out their website for more tour dates and locations.  Sofia really enjoyed it and I’m sure your kids would too!
