School is in full swing and our family is feeling the full effects! It’s our first year with a child in Kindergarten, and although we knew it would be hard, we had no idea what we were in for! Each day is something else new — from trying to prepare him to buy his own lunch and how to check out books at the library to dealing with new friendships, attitudes, and behaviors. Each day is like walking on egg shells waiting and hoping our emotionally and physically exhausted 5 year old doesn’t just exploded. And then you add the other two kids into the mix who are also in preschool and Mother’s Day Out…as you can imagine, each day I look at the calendar and think, “It’s only September!?”

Our family already needs a vacation — bad!

This Fall/Winter we’re already planning our escape and we don’t have to go too far to get there. San Antonio!

This past summer, I shared all that San Antonio has to offer when you visit in the Summer, but there’s even more to do once the weather gets cooler and you’re not having to melt in the Texas heat and humidity. If it’s been awhile since you’ve visited San Antonio, here’s a few of the exciting things happening just 4 hours south of Dallas!

Experience the NEW Riverwalk

Did you know that San Antonio recently completed a $358.3 million project to lengthen the River Walk from three to 15 miles? The expansion began with the Museum Reach, connecting downtown with museums, cultural districts and the historic Pearl Brewery to the north. The Mission Reach completed the expansion and joins the original River Walk to four of the city’s Spanish colonial missions in south San Antonio. Visitors can take in the natural beauty of the river on hike and bike trails.riverwalk-run-bob-howen-visitsanantonio

Cultural Events & Experiences

Fall in San Antonio offers incredible cultural experiences you won’t always find here in Dallas. If you’re looking to do more than just the traditional “tourist” destinations, think about planning your family vacation around these family-friendly events!

Oktoberfest (October 7-8 & 14-15) :: Presented by Beethoven Maennerchor, this volunteer organization is one of the oldest societies in Texas and aims to preserve the German heritage through song, music, and language.  Experience Oktoberfest in the historic King William District of Southtown with authentic German food and music.

Dia de los Muertos (October 29-30) :: There’s not a better time to experience the culture and history of San Antonio with the annual Dia de los Muertos celebrations happening across the city. Be a part of free, public festivals with live music, entertainment, dancers, art shows, and more! (Check out VisitSanAntonio.com to see a listing of events.)

Luminaria (November 9-13) :: One of San Antonio’s most popular events, Luminaria is designed for families! Artists from across the city and country flock to Downtown San Antonio for music, dance, film, literary arts, and theater — all while lighting up Downtown with streetscapes, light installations, and galleries.

It’s All About Kids at The DoSeum

San Antonio’s newest museum is all about the kids! The 65,000-square-foot DoSeum features outdoor space and learning activities to provide children up to age 10 the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills through immersive, hands-on activities. It focuses on science, technology, literacy, art, creativity and imagination on its 5.5-acre campus that is located on the Broadway Reach, which connects it to seven other cultural and educational attractions. (Our sister site in San Antonio provides a GREAT review of this new attraction.)

Krystal Hurst
Krystal is a Dallas-native who began her career as a fourth grade teacher in Richardson RISD, but quickly changed paths to became a stay-at-home mom in 2011. Through a happy coincidence, she stumbled upon (what was then known as) Dallas Moms Blog in 2012 and found a community she’d been looking for since coming a mom. Shortly after joining the team, she gratefully accepted the “baton” passed to her as new owner of the site, and took off with it running full speed! Krystal not only helped to grow Dallas Moms into a large parenting resource, but also launched Collin County Moms in 2016; providing those in the north Dallas suburbs their community resource platform. While building a community, uniting the moms, and growing a business around this passion was a dream come true, after almost 10 years, Krystal officially stepped down as owner, and is now focusing on raising her 4 boys with her husband, Tim, and rediscovering old hobbies.
