Can you believe that Valentine’s Day is next week? If you’re like me, you’re probably scouring Pinterest right now for a cute, handmade Valentine you can throw together for your little one’s party at preschool. Or maybe you need something fun to give out to friends and relatives. Well, look no further! We’ve got a yummy Valentine’s Day treat for you today with a printable gift tag to go with it.

I love baking cookies. And I especially love decorating them. These cookie pops are one of my favorite ways to serve them. Kids love them (I mean, what kid doesn’t love food on a stick!?), and they’re really easy to package as gifts.

What you’ll need:

  • Sugar Cookie Dough (This is my favorite recipe, or you could buy pre-made sugar cookie dough or a mix at the store.)
  • Lollipop Sticks
  • Piping Icing (I use Wilton’s Sparkle Gel.)
  • Flooding Icing (This Glacé Icing is perfect.)
  • Toothpicks

Roll out the dough and cut out cookies into whatever shape you desire. I chose to do big hearts for Valentine’s Day. Be sure you don’t roll the dough too thin (about 1/8 inch is perfect) and make sure it’s uniform the whole way around. Place the cookies on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.

Press a lollipop stick about half-way up the back of each cookie. Don’t push it all the way through! You want it firmly in the cookie, but you don’t want to break it.

Then, put the pan in the freezer for about 5 minutes. This will chill the dough and help the cookies retain their shape as they bake.

Bake the cookies according to the recipe you used and allow to cool. Once they are cool, it’s time to decorate!

Use the piping icing to trace the edge of your cookie. Allow that to set for a while to harden. Then, use the flooding icing to fill in the rest of the cookie. Tip: Draw an outline near your piping outline, but not touching. Use a toothpick to guide the flooding icing to fill in the gaps.

I like to put my flooding icing into a squirt bottle so it’s easier to control, but you don’t have to! You can use a Ziplock bag with the corner cut out. The flooding icing fills in the rest of the cookie. Use a toothpick for all the finer details.

There are lots of different ways you can decorate the cookie pops!

I drew concentric hearts with the piping icing, then filled the two hearts with the flooding icing. You could also fill one big heart with flooding icing, then drop dots on top of it with the piping icing. Or use this technique to make little marbled hearts in your flooding icing.

Now comes the hard part—waiting for them to dry! Seriously, I am so impatient when it comes to letting my cookies dry. But it’s so important to wait. Allow them to dry overnight so there’s no chance they’ll be wet when you package them. You don’t want to ruin all that work you did by smearing wet icing!

You can put these into individual cellophane bags and tie on your Valentines with a ribbon or twine. Use our free printable Valentine’s Day gift tags to complete the package!

And here’s the best part: Now that you’ve got your treats ready, you can go do some fun Valentine’s Day activities with your little ones.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
