If you haven’t done so already, then soon you’ll join moms and dads everywhere that are dropping off their sweet babies for their first day of school. This year, my family’s back to school routine was upgraded as we graduated from preschool to Kindergarten parents! We successfully made it through the first week without any major disasters or meltdowns.
By some small miracle I only got choked up a few times and never once shed a tear. For this I should give full credit to my 3 year old and 10 month old who reminded me almost immediately after drop-off that they were still very much alive, well, and needy! Who has time to be sentimental when you’re a mom of 3?
Now this week, my 3 year old will head off to his first day of preschool followed shortly by my youngest starting Mother’s Day Out. Then, when all the “back to school” hoopla is done and I’ll have my first moment to sit down on my couch in peace, I know that’s when the real tears will begin.
I know some will be tears of sadness as I realize my house is too quiet– my babies will be spread across the city growing up too fast and I’ll have to fight the urge to go pull them all out of school and just hug and rock them. I mean, do I really need to be running errands by myself without full on fights breaking out over who’s touching who in the back seat?! (No mom guilt here!) Okay, but in all honesty, I know most of my tears will be from the realization that we officially “survived” another summer and my sweet kids are back in a solid, structured routine, being taken care of and loved on by some pretty special teachers and caregivers.
Once the mom guilt subsides and I’m able to take a deep breath, the time will come when it’s time to turn the focus and attention on taking care of myself — even if only for a few hours.
Before you get carried away with the sudden realization of freedom and plan too many meetings, projects, or coffee dates with friends, take a moment to block off a time to do something, anything, no matter how small, that makes you feel joyful or simply makes you feel more like YOU! Whether that’s a bubble bath or kick-boxing, reading, meditating… take 15 minutes and enjoy being you. You’ll be surprised by how good it makes you feel! Caring for ourselves is necessary to care for our loved ones.
For me, I know that I become a more calm, patient, and happy mom after de-stressing with a relaxing massage, body wrap, or facial. If this also speaks to you and you’re looking for a spot where you can go to relax, I can highly recommend Spavia Day Spa in West Plano.
