I don’t know if it’s Murphy’s law or it’s just my bad luck, but every time I’ve been sick in recent years, I couldn’t get in to see my doctor. I’ve heard this same sentiment from other mom friends balancing busy work schedules with hectic family lives. It’s probably the main reason I’ve ended up at an urgent care. As a child growing up in Dallas, my mother relied on urgent care centers so much that she thought she had the flu and came to find out she was pregnant…with me! The medical staff was on a first name basis with her, so clearly, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in our family.

MUC6763_Mom_Blog_Digital_300x300_R2Our toddler daughter started preschool last fall which meant our house became a biohazard, one of us was sick at least once a month. We could frequently get in to see her pediatrician, but still relied on local urgent care centers for the off-hours and weekend flexibility. Despite us often being sick simultaneously, we could rarely be treated by the same physician at an urgent care because none of the centers staffed family medicine physicians or clinicians. Few things are worse than loading up your germ-infested mini-me, while holding back your own coughs and sneezes, and driving to the closest urgent care only to learn the doctor or nurse practitioner can’t treat you both. Argh!

That’s why I was thrilled to learn Methodist Urgent Care, in Richardson, The Colony, and now Inwood Village, offers family medicine specialists who work late hours, but don’t make YOU wait an eternity (appointments can even be made online). The icing on the cake is the co-pays and fees are substantially lower than those charged by hospital emergency departments and freestanding EDs. Urgent care doctors and staff treat respiratory illnesses, broken bones, animal bites, wounds, and even offer back-to-school physicals and vaccinations.

The Methodist Urgent Care centers also offer digital X-ray, EKG, rapid flu, rapid strep and pregnancy tests onsite. The facilities accept major insurance plans including UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Medicare. Low cost and short wait time aside, I will be taking our family to the new Methodist Urgent Care in Inwood Village because of ease, we can all be treated at the same time by the same staff, and that is priceless!

Krystal Hurst
Krystal is a Dallas-native who began her career as a fourth grade teacher in Richardson RISD, but quickly changed paths to became a stay-at-home mom in 2011. Through a happy coincidence, she stumbled upon (what was then known as) Dallas Moms Blog in 2012 and found a community she’d been looking for since coming a mom. Shortly after joining the team, she gratefully accepted the “baton” passed to her as new owner of the site, and took off with it running full speed! Krystal not only helped to grow Dallas Moms into a large parenting resource, but also launched Collin County Moms in 2016; providing those in the north Dallas suburbs their community resource platform. While building a community, uniting the moms, and growing a business around this passion was a dream come true, after almost 10 years, Krystal officially stepped down as owner, and is now focusing on raising her 4 boys with her husband, Tim, and rediscovering old hobbies.
