Winter in Texas might not always feel like “winter,” but winter in the Hill Country can make you think you’re up in the Northeast with its beautiful trees, amazing sunsets, and breathtaking views. Every year, we travel to Fredericksburg for an adults-only trip filled with yummy food, chilled adult beverages, and shopping. It’s a quick 5-hour road trip down I-35, and I highly recommend it as a weekend getaway! Be sure to so bring along this great list of just a few of my favorite things about Fredericksburg. (There are a million more!)
My Favorite Place to Stay in Fredericksburg
We love booking our stays with Gästehaus Schmidt, located on Main Street. They can book any kind of stay you are looking for, whether it’s right in town or out in the country—an apartment on Main Street or a whole house with no one but goats as your neighbors.
My Favorite Shopping in Fredericksburg
No matter what your plans are while in Fredericksburg, shopping is a must. We love strolling Main Street searching for unique finds and holiday gifts. All the shops are locally owned by Fredericksburg residents, as no chains or franchises are permitted in the Historic District. Adult beverages are allowed while strolling along Main Street, so you can sip and shop!
My Favorite Restaurants in Fredericksburg
Our favorite fancy restaurant is August E’s, located at 203 E San Antonio Street. They don’t have a huge web presence, but you can check out the menu on their Facebook page at the link above. Call ahead to secure reservations or book a table here. We have enjoyed every single meal we have eaten at August E’s! You will not be disappointed.
Pasta Bella is our favorite Italian place to eat in Fredericksburg. It’s always busy but worth the wait.
Of course, you can’t visit Fredericksburg without some true German food, and Otto’s is our favorite. You MUST check out their Sunday brunch.
My Favorite Breweries & Wineries in Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg is home to some of the most beautiful wineries and breweries in the state, and we have several favorites.
Altstadt Brewery is not only amazing to look at, but the food and drinks are unique and delicious.
Grape Creek has an amazing patio that you should visit as the sun sets. Secure reservations before going!
More Great Activities Near Fredericksburg
Before you leave town, head out to Enchanted Rock for some hiking and fresh air! The views are outstanding, and the photo ops are great. You should also consider swinging by Luckenbach, TX. Visit the general store, listen to some live music, and grab a beer in this iconic, historic town!
Be Merry
While planning your visit, be sure to check out events in Fredericksburg to see all the happenings in town. From the end of November through January, get festive at Christmas Nights of Lights in the Marktplatz, featuring the tree lighting, carols, and German Christmas traditions.
There’s no doubt that Fredericksburg in winter is our favorite, but you’ll have a great time no matter when you visit! Always remember to double check restaurants and events online before making your itinerary. (Are you ready to plan a family road trip?)
