I grew up loving the library! In our small town there was a historic old house that had been converted into a library with a kids’ room that looked just like a castle full of books to me. When I moved to Dallas, I spent a lot of time borrowing from the Dallas library and using their free internet when I was job-seeking in the early 00’s. Now that I’m a mom with kids in Richardson, it’s back to the library for some free and educational fun!
The Richardson Public Library has a beautiful kids’ area. My son, Little Sir, just loves to climb on the Dr. Seuss-like “stairs” on the entryway. He also loves the miniature train table. In the kids’ area, there is plenty of room for a toddler to roam safely while you pick out books to read later.
If you are looking for fun and free activities for toddlers (or kids of any age, see below) in Richardson, look no farther than the Richardson library!
They have a wonderful LapSit class for Little Sir with classes available on Mondays or Thursdays. The name of this class is a little bit of a misnomer because the kids don’t have to sit still (and of course, they don’t!). They listen to stories, watch puppets, and learn songs and dance. Parents are required to come to the class with your toddler and participate in the action. Fortunately, the library staff don’t mind if you bring your younger baby along to the class as long as he or she can sit quietly in a stroller or be worn in a sling to keep them safely out of the way when the toddlers start dancing!
The Fall semester of LapSit just ended this week, but another one will be starting at the first of the year. If you’re a member of the Richardson library, just stop by the kids’ counter at the library and sign up to receive their emails – they’ll email you when the new LapSit semester opens!
There are also other classes for kids both younger and older:
BabySteps – for babies 6-12 months of age and their parents
Elementary Storytime – for kids in grades K-4
Family Storytime – a special evening program for kids ages 3-7 and their parents
Storytime – for kids ages 3-6
As they always remind us at the library, it’s never too early to encourage your child to read (or be read to)!
The Richardson public library is a wonderful place for children. Thanks for the post.
