The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is an adaptation of the best-selling Disney-Hyperion novel by Rick Riordan. Riordan is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than 20 novels for young readers. I know lots of kids with bookshelves lined with Riordan’s work. And I’m sure lots of moms and dads are familiar with these stories as well. This musical adaptation is so much fun for the whole family.
The musical is based on the first book of the Percy Jackson and The Olympians series. Percy is 12-years-old and travels across the country in search of Zeus’ lightning bolt, the original weapon of mass destruction. Mythical creatures ensue. It’s epic, fun and adventure, y’all.
If you aren’t familiar with the story, here is what to expect: Greek gods are real and they’re ruining Percy Jackson’s life. In the musical, Percy has newly-discovered powers he can’t control. He is one of Poseidon’s sons. He’s half god and half human which means he’s a demi-god. And he’s being chased by monsters! It’s exciting stuff. Percy is on a quest to find Zeus’ lightning bolt in order to prevent a war between the gods. There are powerful musical performances too, of course. Moms and children are sure to be mesmerized by the performances.
A review in The Chicago Tribune described Lightning Thief as “one foot in Harry Potter and another in Dear Evan Hansen.” Families will love the enchanting story and the dazzling performances in this musical. Fans of the book will appreciate how loyal the musical remains to the story they already know and love.
The adventure and thrill of this show is sure to keep your family entertained. My son loves stories with big adventures and action. I was thrilled to find out this musical was headed to Dallas.
