Since I was a little girl, I’ve found pulling up to an antique store or an estate sale a thrill. Growing up in Western Kentucky, we didn’t have a large mall or many children’s activities besides playing outside. The antique stores were bountiful, and it soon became a pastime with my mom to pop in on Saturdays and see what was new. Add the height of The Little Mermaid in the mix, and I was Ariel looking for treasures and creating their stores in my imagination.
I still value a craftsman made piece of estate furniture over the new. I love filling our home with oddities from the past – my 1920’s engagement ring is even from an estate jeweler! When I was furnishing my home as a young newlywed, estate sales were the best place to find unique pieces on a budget. Checking the paper and our emails then driving around to the sales with a coffee was a fun and inexpensive Saturday pastime for my husband and I. However, with an 18 month old baby and our careers making us busier than ever, it’s no surprise that lately the dust has settled on my estate sale hunting shoes.
I was thrilled to find Everything But the House (EBTH), an amazing blend of the hunt of estate shopping with the convenience of e-commerce. EBTH is revolutionizing the estate sale industry, making it easy for families to get items sold to the largest net of shoppers and helping individuals like me still go on the hunt for speciality items with the help of knowing what will be at a local sale in advance or even shopping sales across America from home on their easy to browse and bid website.
I’ve been digging around EBTH in my spare time ever since I heard of their site. I love seeing the new sales listed where I can easily see everything clearly photographed and styled from one particular sale. With 65-75 sales added each week, there is always something new! Since I know what styles I like, I am always hopping on the mid-century sales which are easily labeled in the sale title and description. I’m just a few clicks away from our house looking like a Mad Men set thank to EBTH.
I’m also a self-declared handbag and watch junkie, so I also love the category pages where I can filter to all bags listed on the site at once across sales. Ladies, there are some amazing vintage designer items that come through these sales! You don’t have to be an antique hunter to know the glory of finding a Prada weekend bag with one day left of bidding at $125. It’s like finding a unicorn in the woods. The designer watches that pop up are also great.
All shopping online is done through a bidding process, with all items beginning at $1. It’s been easy for me to list my bid on an item and then get back to work and life, since I am emailed by EBTH if I am outbid and wish to increase my offer. Since many of the items are larger pieces of furniture and home accessories, you can even calculate shipping based on ZIP code before you bid to know how high you are willing to spend with that as a factor. I love these features as a shopper, and as a family planning an estate sale this is an asset to let the shopper drive the price instead of under-pricing an item.
EBTH presents sales based out of Boston, Cincinnati, Columbus, Lexington, Los Angeles, Louisville, Indianapolis, Nashville, Atlanta and Southwest Florida and is rapidly expanding to additional cities in 2015, including Dallas. As an avid online shopper already, I really can’t wait for their local sales coming later this week! I’ll be able to go back to the fun of driving up to an estate sale with the value of knowing what to expect inside.
If you love a little story behind the things you buy, you’ll love EBTH for the easiest way to shop estate online and in person. Enjoy getting in the car with your to-go mug of coffee with the satisfaction of knowing real treasures await you instead of taking a chance on the generic listings in the paper. Bring your kids or friends for the fun!
