Summer is just around the corner and for our family that means it’s just about time for the Mayor’s Summer Reading Club. We have participated in the program for two summers (yes, since Margaux was 1!) and we’re excited to do it again this year!
The program was started in 1993 to encourage kids to read throughout the summer and to keep their skills sharp while they’re out of school. Last year they added incentives for adults as well (which I was pretty excited about). The basic gist of it is your children log books through their online system and if they hit the goal for that week you get to pick a prize! For the adults, the program is broken up into two sessions (4 weeks each) and there is a prize drawing for each session.
If you’re like me and like to know what prize you’re working for each week, here is the prize schedule:
Week 1
Non fiction book and Auntie Anne’s Pretzel coupon
Week 2
Dallas Children’s Theater ticket and Legoland voucher
Week 3
Pick 2 of 3
Ringling Bros. Circus Ticket (12 & under)
Ear buds
MSRC tote bag
Week 4
Book & Benihana Kid’s Meal (12 and under) & SMU Meadows Museum backpack
Week 5
Texas Ranger’s ticket, Chipotle coupon, & Nasher voucher
Week 6
Zoo ticket and mood pencil
Week 7
FC Dallas ticket, Mesquite Rodeo ticket, and a sticker
Week 8
Book and certificate of completion
The kickoff for this summer’s program is this Saturday, June 7 with festivities at all Dallas Library branches (you can sign up and see the schedule here).
Hi, just wondering if you have to be a dallas resident to participate in the summer reading program?
Hi Kerri! We did call and confirmed you do NOT need to be a Dallas resident to participate. It’s open to the whole Dallas metroplex; however, you do have to be able to claim your prizes at a local branch of the Dallas Public Library.
Hello there!! I was wondering how and on what day of the week do we redeem the prizes?
