Looking for a big city escape for your family but don’t want to spend the money or time jet-setting off across the country? Houston has the same big city vibes, is rich in history and culture, and is fun for families and kids of all ages, whether you’re there for a week or a weekend!

Before you start planning your adventure, let’s get familiar with the destination. Houston is a quick 3.5–4-hour drive from Dallas or a flight time of 1 hour 15 minutes. Houston is the fourth most populous city in the country with one of the most delicious and diverse culinary scenes. It’s home to the famous Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo where performers from Elvis Presley to Trace Adkins to Justin Bieber have graced the stage.

Let’s not forget Houston’s contributions to space science and exploration! You’ll find NASA’s Johnson Space Center, of the Apollo space missions, which earned Houston the nickname Space City. Houston is also home to several major sports teams such as the Astros, Texans, Dynamo, Dash, and Rockets.

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Houston. I have family history here, and it’s currently home to my sister and her family which gives us the excuse to visit. I love how family-friendly this city is for both big and little travelers and truly offers something entertaining for everyone. I am so excited to share my recommendations and experiences with you as you plan your own family adventure to this great city!

Joanna is a lifelong Dallas resident with part of her heart in New Orleans. Besides giving her a husband, NOLA has many similar priorities: food, family, and faith. All are important parts of her life as a mother of two spirited sisters, one sweet boy, and one extremely needy dog. She graduated from The University of Texas at Dallas with degrees in child learning and development and psychology, before becoming a public school teacher. She is now a full-time, stay-at-home mom who loves experimenting in the kitchen and exploring the local food (and beer) scene. Joanna is also involved in her church, loves a good workout, and diving into a good book (or reality TV show). She loves to share on Instagram and (very) occasionally on her personal blog Cafe Du Martin.
