Trivia alert! Pollination is a behind-the-scenes process that we never think about yet is crucial to our environment and food supply. Did you know that one in every three bites of food we take is thanks to the work of pollinators??
It’s not just for the bees, either; butterflies, wasps, beetles, flies, hummingbirds, and bats all pollinate different species of flowers. I’m almost annoyed to learn this because it contradicts my long-held belief that flies are totally useless and the worst.
On August 12, from 10am to 3pm, Texas Discovery Gardens is having a Pollinator Party to celebrate the hard-working insects that make it all happen. Come learn about pollination, why it’s important, and how you can “bee” a good neighbor to you local pollinators.
The Pollinator Party will have lots of activities and crafts, and you can also get information on cultivating a pollinator garden at home (hello, family project). Flowering plants like lantana, coneflower, Gregg’s mistflower, and autumn sage are Texas-hardy and great for pollinators. Find out what’s good for monarch and eastern black swallowtail caterpillars to experience butterfly metamorphosis in your own yard!
Any event at Texas Discovery Gardens is a great opportunity for family bonding. Make an afternoon of it with a picnic on their 7.5 acres of organic gardens. And don’t miss the butterfly release inside the Butterly House at noon. Photo ops!
