Switch Up Your Photo Sessions: 10 Spots to Let Your Personality Shine in Dallas Family Photos

1

Family photos are a gratuitous favorite of mine. They’re a form of expressing your family’s personality, a way to freeze the hour glass of time that only seems to turn over faster each year and a beautiful and permanent visual representation of how much your family has grown. They are cherished in our homes and sent to our loved ones with a sense of pride and promise for the future.

Spring in Dallas is our most beautiful time of year, and a great time for family photos that mark the beginning of a summer together and the end of a school year. I love that Dallas photographers are often adventurous and that there’s spots for family photos around town as diverse as the many family styles that make up our community. Instead of falling into habit with your photo locations, try something new in your wheelhouse with these suggestions on changing up your scenery.

Love Arbor Hills Nature Preserve or Prairie Creek Park? Try Trinity River Audubon Center.

Lush green and open spaces make these spots perfect for classic family photos focused on natural beauty. With Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano, Prairie Creek Park in Richardson and Trinity River Audubon Center in South Dallas, you can find an oasis nearest you. The hiking trails and indoor exhibit hall at the Audubon make great rewards for good behavior during photo time!

Like Bishop Arts District and Downtown McKinney? Try Dallas Heritage Village.

Our family photos are those rare moments of {usually almost} everyone brushing their teeth and hair at the same time and sitting together to feel a little part of the American dream. Norman Rockwell-style town squares and Main Street U.S.A.s like Bishop Arts District and Historic Downtown McKinney offer bistros, benches and painted store windows to take us back to simpler times. Dallas Heritage Village gives you the real deal with the largest collection of 19th century pioneer and Victorian homes in North Texas. Check out some of their fun programming to break up a day of shooting and bring on some candid laughs and wonderment.

Like White Rock Lake? Try the Las Colinas Canals.

Iconic White Rock Lake is one of our city’s most historically treasured respites and the calming backdrop for many family photos. Waterways, arches, ivy and staircases wrap through Las Colinas to inspire family moments that are classic, playful and intimate at the same time. If you’re really ready to take it up a level, hire one of the canals’ gondola drivers for some especially worldly shots!

Like the Dallas Arts District and Downtown? Try the Continental Pedestrian Bridge at Trinity Groves.

Beautiful architecture, open space and pops of color play off of the Dallas skyline at these two photo venues. If you’ve tried and loved the gorgeous reflecting pool and crisp grey sidewalks of the Dallas Arts District and neighboring Klyde Warren Park and Perot Museum, pop over the Calatrava bridge to the pedestrian walkway and park. It’s modern and family friendly at the same time, with a chocolate store and cake bar just a few hundred feet away for your own mini wrap party at the end of your session.

Family photos can be generic, stressful or grandiose, but they don’t have to be. My advise is to be your best self, find a spot that feels like you and have fun! The more genuine the smiles, the more you will want to remember them for years to come.

Lilly Neubauer
Lilly, Dallas born and bred, was fortunate to live outside of Texas at a young age to know there’s nothing quite like the world class cultural melting pot, big ideas and small town hospitality of her native city. From the biggest landmarks to the smallest taco stands, Lilly has enjoyed sharing her favorite parts of the city and her family’s journey navigating life in it at her blog, Pancakes and Beet Juice. A note to the joy that’s found in balance of life’s rich and healthy pleasures, Pancakes and Beet Juice and Lilly’s writing at Dallas Mom’s Blog cover topics ranging from food, fitness, family and enjoying new experiences in the city and beyond. Her love for Dallas and adventure is only made more fun by seeing old favorites again through the eyes of her daughter, Heidi, welcomed via open domestic adoption. The days are long but the years are short, and the whole mess is documented through various filters at her Instagram page.
