I love researching summer camps; Dallas has so many to offer! I’ve spoken to lots of moms who get overwhelmed by the thought of figuring out their summer plans in early spring. With dates, locations, pricing, themes, and interests to think about, how do you choose what’s best for your kid? And don’t get me started if you have to think about camps for multiple children.
My Type A personality came out in full with calendars and spreadsheets on the “who, when, what, where” of every summer camp in Dallas. After doing more research than most probably do for college admissions, our family chose The Westwood School.
Why?
It came down to pricing, dates, and good themes for our family.
PRICING:: The Westwood School is a private school located near 635 and the Tollway, and with it being private, I assumed it’d also come with a hefty price tag. I was wrong.
Their summer camps are one of the best values, by far. Camp times are from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm and kids can arrive as early as 7:30 am with no extra fee. Extended Day is offered from 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm for only $60 per week for families who need a full-time option during the summer. When you calculate time at camp for the price, The Westwood School beats out any other camp. You’ll pay $500 per week for a 9:00 am – 12:00 pm session at some other private schools!! No thank you.
DATES:: One thing I loved when I chose The Westwood School is their available dates for summer camps. You can book by the week, from June 1 all the way through August 7. This means you don’t have to find and string together multiple camps over the summer.
One summer, before we found The Westwood School, my son moved to a new camp every week. Sure, that’s a lot of new environments, but kids (and parents!) also like a little stability. And at Westwood, if you have a summer vacation planned, you can skip a week. Grandparents taking the kids? Skip a week. But it’s nice to be able to have the entire summer at one camp if you want.
Another thing you’ll notice when trying to schedule summer camps, is that a church camp, for example, might only offer three weeks in June. Or an arts camp may only offer two weeks in July. Ahhhh! It’s like pulling teeth trying to figure out which camp is available which week – but not at Westwood.
THEMES:: Another reason we love and choose The Westwood School for summer camp is their fun weekly themes. Every week it’s something different and diverse, so your kids get the whole summer experience. From outdoor adventures to performing arts and slimy science, their themes work for every kid at every age.
