Does your family love water-related activities as much as mine does? And not just the kids, but my husband too! Although I have to admit that sometimes, after packing everyone’s things up for a trip to the splash pad or pool, I feel like it would just be easier to move right in and stay there. I found out this weekend that you actually can stay near the water fun for days at a time — if that pool is Schlitterbahn Waterpark & Resort in New Braunfels!
My family and I had the opportunity to visit Schlitterbahn Waterpark & Resort in New Braunfels during their family Spring Break session this past weekend. Early spring is typically off-season for the majority of the water park, but did you know that there are dozens of “winter Texans” who come to Schlitterbahn Resort and live there full-time throughout the winter months? These folks get to take advantage of all the natural beauty in New Braunfels right on the river, the newly remodeled cabins and rooms, and the heated pools on the resort properties.
Due to occasional flooding around the Comal River, all the resort cabins and rooms are regularly refurbished. We stayed in the Riverbend Cabins that are a part of the Blastenhoff section of the park. These cabins were built in 2010 and are especially family-friendly because they are literally right next to the most little-kid-friendly parts of the park.
We just walked out our door and over to the Bamboozle Bay heated pool (with swim-up bar!), or around the corner to the pirate-themed Kinder Haven Kids Adventure.
My husband was excited to try out the Torrent River lazy river on a tube.
When we got tired, we just walked around the corner and relaxed in the cabin, where we had a full kitchen and made yummy things like cinnamon rolls and bacon for breakfast in the mornings and sandwiches at noon.
If your family is larger than our party of 4, I highly recommend the Treehaus Luxury Suites, which we toured. These mini-apartments with 3 rooms or more can accommodate from 7 to as many as 17 guests. I immediately started thinking about our upcoming family reunion!
The wood used in building the Treehaus and many of the other resort accommodations has been salvaged from nearby construction projects and milled on Schlitterbahn property, in a mill specifically purchased for that purpose. In addition, Schlitterbahn “gives back” to the environment by filtering all the garbage out of the Comal River and returning cleaner water back to the river. The natural beauty of the area is definitely a big part of the reason this resort is so popular, even in the off-season.
Speaking of local draws, there are so many adorable local eateries in New Braunfels and the surrounding areas that we didn’t even cook in the evenings at the cabin. We had delicious pizza which can be delivered to your cabin at the resort, and another evening we drove 10 minutes to the historic town of Gruene with it’s famous Gristmill restaurant, Gruene Hall with live music, and Gruene General store.
My husband has fond memories of the original Schlitterbahn Water Park from his teenage days living in nearby San Antonio, so we took a little trip down memory lane and saw the original parts of the park that will be open later in the summer. Maybe you remember these parts of Schlitterbahn Waterpark too?
I had never been to Schlitterbahn water parks and I was very impressed by the size of the resort and variety of activities available even in the off season. Our children are 3 years old and 4 years old, and the off season with the heated small pools was perfect for them. We will definitely be going back to Schlitterbahn to check out the other parts of the park and to adequately experience the swim-up bars. My vote is for staying at the resort in the cabins again as well!
