Brushing teeth is a battle in our house. Nicolas is an easy going kid with only one steadfast rule: “Do not stick anything in my mouth”. Violators of this policy will be punished by projectile vomit. He prefers to be in control of the spoon, food, rocks, and everything else that goes into his mouth. I have learned to follow this rule or carry an extra shirt. Therefore, I obviously put off brushing his teeth as long as possible.
I knew that brushing was going to have to happen on his terms. I have taken the “modeling” approach. I sit in front of him with my toothbrush and brush my own teeth. He then takes his toothbrush, and brushes my teeth as well. Nicolas enjoys this, however I am the only one that comes out with clean teeth. It is time for a new approach.
Enter Stepping Stories. I was excited to hear about Stepping Stories because as a child therapist I have had success teaching children through the use of “social stories”. Social stories give children a way to view a particular topic or challenge through a new, approachable perspective—a character in a book. Stepping Stories offers personalized books that help young children work through transitions and challenges.
I love that this company was founded by two moms inspired by their own experiences. I doubly love that they used a team of child development experts to structure these stories to be told in the most effective way. This is done by presenting a story in simple words and incorporating repetition to drive home important points. The books use your child’s name and image to pull in their interest. Using these methods, children quickly identify with these stories apply them to their lives.
Currently Stepping Stories offers books on a variety of topics including sleep, food allergies, death of a pet, going to school, new siblings, divorce, potty, doctor/dentist visit, taking turns, moving, and family illness. Keep an eye out for new topics as this company continues to grow. They also have a handy video that explains how to personalize your book, which can be ordered in print or as an ebook.
I believe that these books will best serve children between the ages of 2-5. I look forward to reading Nicolas his book as he grows in the coming years. I also plan to invest in other stories as life gets sticky and we face more challenges.
