Moms Who Inspire: Cassy Lawson

0

From media personalities and print writers to leaders and travelers, Dallas-Fort Worth is full of amazing women who have found ways to stand above a crowd.  When we have the opportunity, we’re always thrilled to be able to interview some of those who help motivate us to be better moms, wives, and women.

This week, in honor of our “Shop Local. Support Moms.” campaign, we’re continuing our series with another amazing mom we think you should meet!

Meet Cassy Lawson!

Cassy is an Oklahoma girl, born and raised, who found herself in Texas at Abilene Christian University.  From there, she met her husband Chad, got married, moved to Dallas and never looked back!

Cassy considers herself an at-home mom to her three children (Cohen-6, Channing-4, and Campbell-2) and is a strong support to her husband who is a high school basketball coach and teacher at JJ Pearce High School.

But don’t let this description of her life in suburbia fool you! She is one hard-working mama as the creator of, not 1, but 2 small businesses!!

Back in 2010, Cassy and her business partner developed a conference called Project Mom. (You may have seen Dallas Moms Blog mention it a time or two!) For two years, Cassy worked to develop this dream into the conference that it has become today!

Then in 2013, Cassy decided to sell her portion of the conference and begin working on her next big endeavor–Lawson Event Rentals.

Currently, you’ll find Cassy working hard on the weekends with her new family-owned business to make weddings, corporate events, and parties beautiful through furniture, lighting, and serving wear rentals! (Did you see the trendy Silver Chiavari Chairs at DFW Moms Night Out? Those were courtesy of Cassy!)

As a mom who does it all, we asked Cassy a few questions on what it’s like to own start and own a small business and what she enjoys most about living in the best city in Texas!

What do you love most about Dallas?

Community, hands down!  To us Dallas is the friendships we’ve made here over the years  It started in the home groups we’ve been in over the years through our church.  Also in our neighborhood and kid’s sports.  And now that our oldest is in Kindergarten we’re beginning to develop relationships with the other families at school.

What is your favorite thing to do with the kids around town?

We like to find indoor playgrounds… the best one we’ve recently discovered is the Tree Fort in Watermark Church.

You’re always dressed so cute! Where’s your favorite place to shop?

Oh goodness… since I’m a girl who likes change, I rarely shop at the same store.  I do love Francesca’s though!

When you and your hubby can escape for a night on the town, do you have a favorite date spot?

We are sushi fanatics and we love trying new places.  So our date nights usually consist of tracking down a sushi bar we’ve never been too and having a long drawn out sushi dinner with lots of adult conversation!

What do you love most about being a mom?

How much they make me laugh!  I love all the “inside family jokes” we have.  Right now they’re at the age where it is really cool to have inside jokes with mommy and daddy.  Not sure how long that will last, but I’m going to enjoy it while I can!

What inspired you to start your own business?

I’ve always been the self-starter/entrepreneur type.  I always like doing something new in the event industry, which is where my comfort zone lies.

What challenges do you face trying to balance being a small business owner and mom?

Knowing when to stop! I constantly have to remind myself that there are only so many hours in a day, and whatever doesn’t get done on “to do” list that day, we’ll just have to get moved over to the next day!

Is there any advice you can give to moms who want to follow their own dreams of running a business?

You’re always going to have doubts, just like any person who has ever started any business big or small.  You’re never going to know if it will work if you don’t try it!  What’s the worst thing that can happen?  If it doesn’t work out, you pick-up and move on.  If it does, you’ve created something incredible and helped meet a need.  However, my experience is that if there is someone passionate behind a great idea… it’s going to work!  It’s the passion and hard work that makes something take off!
