I know our site is self-identified as a local-based parenting resource for moms and families, so this may be a stretch for relative content. BUT… I have to get this off my chest.
I MISS SPORTS!
I love just about every sport. I have even looked up official tournament-style rules for tetherball recently. Sports is a huge part of my life, and I really miss it lately. Our family time revolves around whatever sports season we are in at the time – football, basketball, baseball, hockey… even auto racing! We love it all.
Okay, I feel like maybe you can understand my plight now. I have an obsession, and I am in need of a fix. I have turned to sports documentaries in quarantine, and maybe my list can help you get your own little taste to hold you over.
FOOTBALL :: Last Chance U (Netflix)
Last Chance U follows football players with tough pasts who turn to playing football at junior colleges to try to achieve their dreams and turn their lives around. Many of them are taking their last shot at taking control of their future. I have really loved watching all 4 seasons and several of the players have actually made their way to my alma mater and other teams I follow.
Runners Up: Undefeated (Netflix), All of Nothing (Amazon Prime), Hard Knocks (HBO)
BASKETBALL :: The Last Dance (ESPN App)
The Last Dance is a 10-part docuseries chronicling the career of Michael Jordan. The episodes are filled with footage from the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls season and includes interviews with over 100 people. It was truly an incredibly experience to watch, and I am actually looking forward to watching it again!
Runners Up: The Carter Effect (Netflix), Basketball or Nothing (Netflix), Chi-Town (Amazon Prime)
AUTO RACING :: Formula 1: Drive to Survive (Netflix)
The production of Formula 1: Drive to Survive is truly incredible. It hooked me right away! I have never watched Formula 1 races previously, but I gave this series a try and have recommended it to many people I know. I learned so much that I never knew before, and it is really interesting to see all the different countries they race in. (So you get the sports AND travel bug itched in one series!)
Runners Up: Qualified (A 30 for 30 episode on ESPN), Senna (Netflix), The 24 Hour War (Amazon Prime)
BASEBALL :: Baseball, A Film by Ken Burns (PBS)
One of my guy friends told me that if this wasn’t included on the list, then it wasn’t a good list. Anyone who enjoys baseball will love this documentary. Baseball, A Film by Ken Burns is the story of America. It chronicles baseball becoming our nation’s pastime through many different periods of time. It is a must watch for any fan of baseball.
Runners Up: Screwball (Netflix), The Battered Bastards of Baseball (Netflix), Long Gone Summer (A 30 for 30 episode on ESPN)
SOCCER :: Sunderland ‘Til I Die (Netflix)
If you want to get an accurate picture of how ingrained soccer is to a community in Europe, then watch this ASAP. Sunderland ‘Til I Die starts out with a priest praying for the success of the team during a Sunday service because it means so much to the livelihood and mental state of the people in that city. Spoiler Alert – the team is at the bottom of the standings and frustrations are boiling over.
