Mother's Day Brunch

Have you thought about how you’ll be celebrating Mother’s Day this year? A family gathering? Or perhaps the perfect Mother’s Day gift is doing absolutely nothing at all. If you have yet to pin down your plans for Mother’s Day, you may want to consider having brunch at home!

For the past few major holidays, we’ve been celebrating with family brunches at our house and have had such a fantastic time. Our kids’ best time of the day tends to be in the morning, and they are still young enough that they both take naps in the afternoon. Hosting Mother’s Day brunch is the best of both worlds in terms of timing (a crying, cranky child is not my kind of celebration) and quality family time. Being at home also means you will avoid hectic, crowded restaurants or battle to get a reservation somewhere.

Below I am sharing some of my tried and true brunch recipes that are sure to make your Mother’s Day a delicious celebration enjoyed by all!

Tried-and-True Mother’s Day Brunch Recipes

Main Dish: The Pioneer Woman’s Cowboy Quiche

This quiche is rich, hearty, and delicious. It has become a mainstay in our Mother’s Day brunch menu and makes enough to feed a crowd. We have a large cast-iron skillet that holds the entire recipe, otherwise it takes two standard pie pans. It’s also customizable to your liking. We’ve had it with sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, and goat cheese (replacing the cheddar) and with shredded kale and bacon. You can also try your hand at the perfect homemade pie crust recipe, or Trader Joe’s frozen pie crusts if you don’t have time to make your own (I love those!). This recipe can also be made beforehand—either the day before and warmed up in the oven 30–45 minutes before serving or frozen and thawed the day before.

Side option 1: Simple, Mixed-Greens Savory Salad

It has been so refreshing to add a green savory salad to my brunch menus lately. With the weather getting warmer, a salad is a nice light but still flavorful pairing. My absolute favorite salad right now is mixed salad greens, goat cheese crumbles (Trader Joe’s Marinated Goat Cheese Medallions are the best!), and No Crumbs Left Marinated Onions. Drizzle a little of the marinated onion oil on the salad, a squeeze of lemon juice, and you have an indulgent yet easy homemade salad. If you want to add a little crunch to your greens, sprinkle them with shelled pistachios or crisp up some hunks of French bread under your broiler for homemade croutons!

Side option 2: Boozy Fruit Salad and Everything Dip

A sweet side (with a kick!) balances out the main dish. Fruit salad is a good go-to for brunches, summer barbeques, and potluck dinners with friends. I like to make two bowls of fruit salad—one for the adults and one for the kiddos. Pair the fruit salad with my family’s favorite whipped cream dip; we coined it “Everything Dip” because it’s truly something you’ll want to eat with everything.

Instructions
  1. Combine all of your ingredients and mix until all of the fruit is equally coated in sugar, orange liqueur, and chopped mint. Chill in fridge and let marinate overnight before serving.
  2. Obviously, for a more kid-friendly version leave out the orange liqueur. Sliced cucumbers also work great in this salad!

Cocktail: Raspberry Lemon Zinger

This cocktail recipe has made several appearances in my life, and I have my high school best friend’s mom to thank for that. I first learned about it at my bridal shower, and since then, it has become a celebratory staple with that group of friends. It is refreshing, springy, and a nice change from your classic mimosa.

The real key to brunch at home is to communicate to your partner that to make this a true Mother’s Day gift, you are OFF clean-up duty. Maybe pour yourself an extra cocktail, take a little bath, or sit outside while the kiddos play and someone else deals with the mess of dishes and sweeping. Above all else, know how great you are, that you are doing a fantastic job, and that being a mother is truly the best job in the world. Happy Mother’s Day to all our fabulous Dallas moms!
