This summer, Writing Workshops Dallas is offering week-long writing camps for teens and young writers which focus on creating artful writing so that each student can leave the course with a greater understanding of how stories are made, from imagination, to writing, to revision. These fast-paced, exciting five days will be led by Amber Royer, whose debut novel Free Chocolate was named one of Barnes & Noble’s 25 Debuts to Watch for in 2018. Amber spent five years as a youth librarian where she organized teen writers’ groups and teen writing contests, and also had the privilege of writing part of the original classroom-use materials for NaNoWriMo’s Young Writer’s Program.
What do students learn during the writing camps?
The Writing Workshops Dallas teen camps (grades 8-12) assume that the teens involved are serious about writing as a future career or hobby. Amber Royer teaches these workshops the same way she teaches beginner’s fiction with adult students; she teaches them the theory behind constructing a good story, and gives them the chance to have work critiqued by their peers, so that those stories will be something they can look back on and be proud of. The course covers character, plot, worldbuilding, theme, and how to keep building writing skills even after the camp is over. By the end of the week, each participant will have a notebook of stories started/worked on in class and a solid understanding of the pillars of fiction writing technique.
The writing camp for the younger students (grades 4-7) is about exploration, discovering what kinds of things might be fun to write by discussing a range of genres and published books, and the writing exercises are interspersed with language games. The goal for the younger writers is to introduce them to fiction writing and let them see that spilling words onto the page can be fun. They should come away with increased confidence in their ability to tell stories and have a basic understanding of what goes into a story. Each participant will also have a notebook of completed writing exercises.
Amber loves watching students grow in confidence as they start to trust each other during critique and apply what their peers are telling them. Typically, they all become invested in each other’s stories, and it is fun to see how a writer reacts the first time their characters become real to someone else. Students finish the course with a better appreciation for both sentence and story.
