Let Freedom Ring!

Tomorrow is the 4th of July and for me, it’s actually one of my favorite holidays.  The carefree feel of summer, the festive fireworks, backyard BBQs, and of course, patriotism for our country, and you’ve got yourself a pretty great holiday!  So how are you celebrating?  If you don’t have plans because you don’t know where to go, let me help you out.  I did a little sleuthing and here’s how people around the city are celebrating:

When I first moved to Dallas, everyone talked about Kaboom Town in Addison.  It’s actually going on tonight, starting at 5pm, so you’ve got plenty of time to get down there and get a good seat.  It’s free to find a great watching spot and enjoy the fireworks show at dusk, and you can enjoy live music from local radio stations along with great food from area restaurants.  I’ve heard that it can be lots of fun, but as with any of these celebrations, expect parking delays and get there early to get the prime fireworks-watching spot.

Do you live near Arlington Highlands?  There’s a party on the 4th in your backyard!  I don’t know about you, but I do love me a live band and you can never go wrong with a good sno-cone!

The city of Bedford is having their annual 4thFEST, an all-day celebration that includes a splash park, bounce houses, live music and good food.  Most of the activities are free, but some parking isn’t.  Be sure to bring some cash for the limited on-site parking or the shuttle services.  Admission to the aquatic center is less than ten dollars, which I would gladly pay if it would keep me from melting during these hot summer days!

Dallas’ biggest celebration will be at the Cotton Bowl in Fair Park.  It’s free, family friendly and there’s a ‘dancing water’ show!  What is that?  No idea, but it sounds super cool.  If you go, be sure to report back and let me know how great it was!  What’s great about this location is that from 4:30-7:30, you can enjoy reduced admission to the six museums at Fair Park.  I just visited the Children’s Museum for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it was so much fun!  You could visit the museum in the afternoon and when the sun goes down, you can watch the fireworks display from inside the Cotton Bowl.

These are just a few of the events happening around town on the 4th of July.  For a more complete list, check out this cool webpage I found.  There are so many events happening in the metroplex, there’s bound to be one close to you!

So where are you celebrating?  Will you get out and visit one of the events around town?  Or are you having your celebration in your own backyard?  Will you host a watermelon seed spitting contest?  Some of my fondest memories are of the 4th of July, playing with sparklers with the neighborhood kids, lighting firecrackers and running away as fast as I could, and hearing the echoing booms from the big displays around the city.

What are your plans for the holiday?

  1. Thank you for sharing! My family is still deciding between attending Kaboom Town & the fireworks show at Southlake Town Square this evening. We live in Grapevine so Southlake is a lot closer and convenient with our 14 month old daughter. We shall see! 🙂 Happy Fourth of July to you & your family!
