Looking for a new indoor activity to do with your toddler/preschooler to beat the heat?
Look no further……..
I’ve got a simple homemade playdough recipe for you that smells amazing and has endless possibilities of ways to keep your child entertained.
My mom made this playdough recipe for me when I was a kid so it is tried and true. She always put food coloring in it but I put a little twist to the recipe and put Kool-Aid in it instead which is what makes it smell so good. I’ve always preferred homemade playdough over store-bought playdough because it doesn’t seem to dry out and get crumbly and it lasts way longer!
Here’s what you will need…
- 1 cup flour
- ½ cup salt
- 1 cup water
- 1 Tbsp oil
- 2 tsp cream of tartar
- 2 pkgs of Kool-Aid
Here’s how to make it…
- Mix the flour, salt, and cream of tartar in a heavy saucepan.
- Combine the water and the oil and slowly pour into the flour mixture, stirring constantly and cook over medium heat.
- Cook and stir until it forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan (about 3 minutes). Turn out onto wax paper and let it cool.
- After it cools, separate the playdough into two separate balls.
- Flatten the balls and pour a pack of Kool-Aid on each one.
- Knead until all the Kool-Aid is mixed in and the color is even.
- Store each color ball in a separate zip-loc bag.
I love playdough because the activities you can do with it are endless. We had a ball this afternoon playing with our “Mixed Berry Playdough!”
My son’s favorite activity is to spell all the names of our family members.
We also love making “cupcakes” and putting candles on them. We started with one candle and went all the way up to ten.
