It’s no secret: I DO NOT make laid-back babies. While my 2 year old son is smart and hilarious, he does not like trying new things. Every time we walked into a neighborhood happy hour, a new friend’s house for a playdate, or (Heaven forbid) an organized class, my sweet son would throw himself around like a fish out of water. These tantrums would be accompanied by him screaming, “GO HOME! GO HOME! GO HOME!” What was a Mom to do? Put my tail between my legs and walk to the car like a complete failure.
Well, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again,” right? Or maybe, “Keep trying so you don’t go nuts being cooped up in the house” may be more appropriate. So with both of these thoughts in mind (and MUCH anxiety), we signed up for the Big Muscles class at Kidville.
I don’t know, maybe my son has matured or maybe Kidville just gets it, but my son is thriving in this wonderful class. There is something great about walking into a big, clean, colorful gym filled with slides, a trampoline, balls, and bubbles. The music playlist is also fun for parents too. I catch myself dancing around to some Michael Jackson and laughing out loud when my son is running and jumping to the Rocky theme song.
Here are a few reasons why I think the Big Muscles class at Kidville is a perfect fit for my son:
1. The instructors are loving, patient and organized.
2. The class is structured enough so my son is familiar with what to expect (but laid-back enough so he can run around and be a 2 year old.)
3. They teach a concept (last two weeks were “Up and Down”) and explore it in a kinesthetic way, with fun music in the background.
4. My non-laid back son, RUNS this class. He participates, laughs the entire time, and asks for “More big muscles??!!” after each class.
I’ll put this one in the win column.
