If it’s been awhile since you ventured down to Greenville Ave., then it’s definitely time to make that trip. There’s an awesome new burger joint in town and it’s guaranteed to become a local favorite!
Grub Burger Bar is located on the West side of Greenville Avenue between Lovers Lane and University–across from Start and Rusty Taco. (I describe the location well because it’s located at the bottom of the Energy Square building, and if you’re not paying attention, you might miss it!)
The Family Side
What I love most about this restaurant is that it can be whatever you want it to be!
For our first visit, my husband and I met up on a weeknight with our two boys (ages 3 and 1) to enjoy a meal out before heading home to begin bedtime. In a trendy location like Greenville Ave, I always get nervous walking into a new restaurant because I never know how my children are going to be received. Are we going to be surrounded by college kids? Is it a loud or quiet atmosphere? If my kids throw a tantrum will the whole restaurant be watching?
Although the restaurant design gives you the feeling like you’re walking into an upscale night-life restaurant, the welcoming and friendly staff plus line style service gave me great comfort that it was just a well-done casual restaurant.
When we went to sit down, I got a little uncomfortable again as I noticed all the booths were taken and high-tops were the only tables left. As most of you know, a toddler and infant don’t sit well at high-tops. My mom sense kicked in and I frantically began processing my two choices: wait for a table to open up or carefully juggle baby in my lap while monitoring toddler in a tall chair?
Before I was able to make my choice, the staff quickly came over with a “Hook On” Chair for the table. Within seconds we were seated with my 1 year old having a blast hovering in his seat!
Our dinner that night came out quickly! We were waited on throughout the night and always with a smile…including when my 3 year old decided to drink out of my cup and spilled water over the entire table.
The Bar Side
For my second visit, I went for a date night with 3 other couples from Dallas Moms Blog.
We started at the bar and I ordered a Sweet Caroline – Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka, Backwoods Moonshine, Sweet Tea & Lemonade. (I promise I’m not a heavy drinker!)
I was a little nervous ordering this drink based on the liquor I saw was in it, but it was amazing!! Within the first few sips I knew I’d have to remind myself with each taste that it DID contain alcohol and I’d better be careful!
My husband loved their beer section as they’ve aimed to stay local. Their beers on tab included Revolver, Peticolas, Rahr & Sons, Lakewood, and Shiner. Not to mention a few other national craft beer favorites like Brooklyn Lager and Magic Hat #9.
The bartender was knowledgeable and took an interest in our tastes to help us choose drinks that we’d enjoy…and transferring our tab to our table wasn’t a problem!
No Matter the Reason…You Go For the Food!
If you’re looking for a standard burger with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a bun, Grub Burger Bar has it … but if that’s your order, you’d really be missing out!
Suggestion: If you go with a group of friends or go with your family, think about burger sharing! Grub has such an awesome selection of burgers, eating just 1 flavor during your whole meal could be a wasted experience.
Having been twice now, thanks to friends who were willing to share, I’ve successfully tried almost half the menu and can make some great recommendations.
Start with the Luau Fries. Grub skinny fries, Pulled Pork, cheddar cheese, grilled pineapple and topped with Teriyaki, BBQ sauce, & jalapenos. It’s filling, but amazing! The Bucket List Chicken Bites are also pretty delicious, but I don’t have much of a spicy tolerance, and I was drinking water between each bite!
If you’re a meat eater (or not on a diet), you’re pretty much safe with anything you choose! All their meat burgers are a signature brisket & certified chuck blend that’s ground each morning and served on freshly baked-from-scratch-buns. The Guacapotle (chipotle aioli, cheddar cheese, and guacamole) and the Lockhart Legend (applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, housemade Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce, topped with 2 hand battered onion rings and sliced dill pickles) are probably my favorite. But you really just can’t go wrong!!
I’m of the personal belief that a burger = meat; however, if you’re needing something a little different Grub is as good as it gets for “Burgers that Don’t Moo.” Their Jive Turkey is pretty incredible as it’s 100% turkey breast ground and seasoned with pesto, served with bacon, swiss, sprouts, avocado, and chipotle aioli on a whole wheat bun.
Oddly enough, the Greek Chicken Burger is another personal favorite! 100% chicken breast, ground in house, olive crusted, topped with feta cheese, lemon caper vinaigrette, arugula, tomoato, and fresh tzatzski.
And of course, make sure to add a side of their skinny fries or sweet potato fries!
I’m sure you’re already full after just reading this review, but before you go in, make sure to leave room for Grub’s hand spun milkshakes. Again, my personal favorite is the Nutella or Mint Chocolate Chip (made with Andes Mints).
If you’re not convinced by my experiences, give Grub Burger Bar a try for yourself! Head out with your hubby for a date night or with your family for a meal on the town…either way, you won’t be disappointed!
