We have been homeschooling for a while now, which, to be honest, wasn’t originally part of our plan. While there are many resources available out there for homeschooling families, the costs add up quick. And you can’t often find the routine or caliber of education we’ve come to appreciate from more traditional school environments. It’s overwhelming and stressful trying to make heads or tails of so many options.
But I’ve got excellent news for all my fellow overwhelmed homeschooling parents. I’ve discovered the homeschooling parent’s secret to success: Great Hearts Online. They offer a tuition-free, virtual academy based on a classical liberal arts curriculum for kindergarten through eighth-grade students in Texas. And, from what I’ve heard, upper grades are just around the corner, as well.
I come from a family of educators. There is a lot of dinner table talk about education styles and ways to foster a love of learning. We have heard so many good things about schools in the Great Hearts network over the years. So we were pleasantly surprised to learn about Great Hearts Online.
THE GREAT HEARTS PHILOSOPHY
One of the most appealing things about a Great Hearts education is how they help students grow into what they call great-hearted leaders who share in knowledge rooted in the classical liberal arts education.
I absolutely love this, from the Great Hearts Philosophy:
“We do not dispute the usefulness of a liberal arts education, and we gladly prepare our students for college studies, but our main purpose is the formation of the soul, heart, and mind. Liberal education consists of cognitive, emotional, and moral education—thinking deeply, loving noble things, and living well together. We believe, with Plato, that the highest goal of education is to become good, intellectually and morally.”
THE GREAT HEARTS ONLINE EXPERIENCE
And there’s no need to worry that Great Hearts Online will entail hours and hours of sitting, staring at a screen. Great Hearts Online is surprisingly interactive for a virtual educational program. You can even find a link to a helpful walkthrough of a typical school day.
One of the things I’ve grown to appreciate about homeschooling is the flexibility, but I miss the community of the in-person experience. I know many other homeschool parents feel the same way.
Great Hearts Online provides both the community and school spirit of a traditional school experience, GHO provides both the community and school spirit of a traditional school experience, as well as much of the family comforts of homeschooling. In a 2021 survey, nearly 90% of homeschooling families were more satisfied with their Great Hearts Online experience than with their previous homeschool experience.
Students receive live instruction from engaging teachers in small classrooms throughout Texas Monday through Thursday, as well as independent assignments to complete offline. Great Hearts Online also offers advanced math and science classes in addition to music, art, and language.
This free educational opportunity will surely be a big blessing for so many families throughout Texas who are looking for virtual school and homeschool options that meet a high standard. More than 70% of their students go on to earn merit-based scholarships at universities throughout the country.
Great Hearts Online is open for enrollment for the 2022-2023 school year. As a mom, I appreciate the Great Hearts mission to cultivate the hearts and minds of students in pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. Did I mention it is tuition-free?
