This moving and humorous story plays at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, at the Eisemann Center in Richardson.
The Boy Who Would Be Captain Hook is David Harrell’s story of childhood and growing up. Born without his right hand and fitted with a prosthetic hook before starting school, he sits on the sidelines at recess until the game becomes Peter Pan. He makes a perfect Captain Hook but grows tired of playing the part and wants instead to play a hero.
The performing arts piece looks at what happens when we decide not to be defined by our circumstances. What happens when we change the game? David brings us funny and colorful characters from his childhood and serves as a storyteller and a performer, teaching the importance of accepting and including others who may not look the same way we do.
This heartwarming story encourages audiences to recognize our universal shared experience. The play serves as a catalyst for discussion of broader themes of diversity and inclusion. David proves that disability is not a heroic obstacle to overcome but a unique aspect of one’s life. It’s a beautiful reminder that we are all unique and awesome.
The Eisemann Center serves the entire North Texas region, offering entertainment and special events. Since opening in 2002, the Eisemann has been recognized as one of DFW’s leading performing arts facilities.
