Growing up, I wasn’t your typical “girly” girl. While most of my girl friends were playing in their Caboodle, I was collecting baseball cards in plastic sleeves. I’d sit with the boys and talk about favorite basketball teams over lunch. And I never hesitated to jump right in when my younger brother would pull a street hockey team together with neighborhood kids.
As I became older, the open invitation was no longer extended to play and my interest in sports slowly diminished. It became apparent that girls shouldn’t play with boys — even in simple neighborhood pick-up games.
Having kids of my own, the athlete has come back out in me. Not on the field, but as a spectator. There’s nothing more fun than cheering from the sidelines as your child scores a goal or makes that run. As I begin to see their love for sports start to take shape, it becomes more evident how important it is to encourage and support their talents, and not allow any outside influences to discourage their interests.
And as a mom of 3 boys (who hopes to give them a sister one day), I hope to instill in them that athleticism knows no gender. Just like boys, girls can be tough, fast, and confident, and can hold their own against any opponent.
It’s this reason that Niagara Water, a family-owned bottled water company, has partnered with Team USA soccer star, Heather O’Reilly to encourage all girls out there to #GirlUp and win!
The youth club soccer team featured in this video epitomizes teamwork, shared commitment, decision-making under pressure, leadership and the guts it takes to stand up to old conventions.
