Dallas Fun: Road Trip to the Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History

It’s not too often we suggest you travel across the metroplex for an outing (ok, we did for Burger’s Lake, and once again, you should go!) but we found another gem in Ft. Worth that is worth a road trip with the little ones – the Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History.ย This museum is so big and so great that any age kid is sure to have a blast. Lauren and I recently went with our little ones and they had a great time. The museum is full of wonderful exhibits- permanent and temporary. The museum strives to make each exhibit as interesting as possible for children and therefore is full of technology and hands-on experiences.

Take the Cattle Raisers Exhibit for example. This 10,000 square-foot space is dedicated to the importance of raising cattle and ranching in Texas and the southwest. During this educational experience, children have the opportunities to mount a digitally- interactive horse (much cooler to those at a young age!), try their hand at running a ranch through a digitally-enhanced game and use a touch-screen to build a healthy meal. So what could have been a boring exhibit has been taken to new heights to ensure interest and learning.

My favorite part was the children’s area, dedicated to those 8 and younger. I was able to put Halle down on a mat and watch her play while other kids around us where playing on a train, in an ambulance, with a giant train track and watching tubes of bubbles. One of the most popular spots was outside in the splash zone. It was so fun watching little kids learn about currents and pressure while being able to play in appropriately-sized water stations. As you can see, Halle absolutely LOVED the baby water table!

I don’t have enough space or time to tell you about the giant dragon slide, the dinosaur dig, the aviation center, the 4-D Energy Blast, and all the other awesome hands-on “stuff.” But I do have time for a few helpful hints. It took me about 45 minutes from Northpark Mall to the FWMSH. Parking is $5 or you can park on the street in the neighborhood across the street. Pack a lunch so you don’t have to leave when the kids get fussy and hungry; you’ll want to make the most of your time. Every Tuesday through the summer is Buy One Get One free.

It really makes for a fun roadtrip…let me know if you go!

  1. I want to go there. Looks way better than the Science place at fair park. I can’t wait for the new science museum to open next year.
