Last fall, I had the opportunity to take my two eldest girls (ages 7 and 5 at the time) to Disney’s The Lion King at the Music Hall in Fair Park. It was absolutely amazing, and when the DSM gave us the opportunity to see their latest Broadway production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid at Dallas Summer Musicals opening weekend, I jumped at the chance! My whole family unanimously agreed…
It was “awesome!”
What made this experience so fantastic for our family?
For starters the level of kid-friendliness was off the charts. Prior to the start of the show, there was a “create your own dinglehopper” craft, as well as coloring pages and crayons for children to keep entertained while waiting for the curtain call. And for little tummies, they were serving FREE lemonade and animal crackers.
The play itself offered both old and new treats for fans of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. This definitely came as a surprise to me being very new to the experience of musicals. While there were many favorite songs from the movie, such as “Part of Your World” and the Oscar winning “Under the Sea”, and the basic plot remained the same, there were also differences unique to the Broadway play… which I will NOT spoil here. Anyone hesitating about seeing the play because they’ve already seen the movie need not worry!
Add to this amazing vocals for the adults to enjoy, your children getting to see Ariel AND Prince Eric in front of them, and you have a genuine winner for everyone.
Parents Warning: Be warned that Disney’s The Little Mermaid is meant for ages 6 and up. We brought our 5 1/2 year old who does not scare easily and she did just fine, but if your little ones would be scared by dark scenes and one very bad sea witch you may want to leave them at home until they get a little bit older.
Disney’s The Little Mermaid is presented by the Dallas Summer Musicals for a short time from February 18th-March 2nd. Showtimes are 7:30pm Tuesday-Sunday with a 1:30 matinee on the weekends.
