In 2006, the inspirational local book, Same Kind of Different As Me
Now, the authors of Same Kind of Different As Me, Ron Hall and Denver Moore, have retold their story of unlikely friendship in a new children’s book called Everybody Can Help Somebody. Denver grew up dirt poor as a sharecropper. He never attended school or learned how to read and write. He spent time in prison. He lived on the streets of Fort Worth for over two decades, until Ron (an international art dealer) and his wife Debbie reached out and formed an authentic relationship with him.
The book lays out the facts of Denver’s childhood and consequent life as a homeless man clearly and accurately. Denver was miserable, lonely, and angry. Life’s circumstances had been hard. However, Ron and Debbie made a difference in Denver’s life, and he went on to make a difference in others’ lives. He became an artist, author, and speaker who raised millions of dollars toward helping the homeless.
The main theme of the book is “Nobody can help everybody, but everybody can help somebody.” The book focuses on God’s love for each person, and how people can show love to those around them.
Those are lessons I hope my children learn well. This book is an excellent tool for reinforcing important values.
I was privileged to hear Ron Hall and Denver Moore speak at an event in September 2011. Their story is truly compelling. In a society that often promotes self-indulgence and indifference, Ron and Denver’s counter-cultural message is refreshing.
Sadly, Denver passed away about 6 months after I heard him speak. This children’s book is one of the last things he and Ron worked on together. Denver’s message that calls everyone to generous, caring action lives on in the pages of a simple book with colorful illustrations. It’s a book that reminds young children (the age recommendation for this book is 4-8) that they are loved and they can make a difference. And it reminds me, too.
