It’s official, I am a book club dropout. It didn’t happen on purpose. But no matter how strong my intentions, the reality is there is never enough time for reading books in this season of my life.
Reading requires commitment and focus. What if, imagine, instead of books we chatted about podcasts. I could listen to podcasts as I was shuttling my kids to school or on my drive to work. I could listen to podcasts and clean my house or fold the laundry. And thus, Podcast Club was formed.
I do not claim to be the first person to do this, but it wasn’t something I had heard of several years ago when we started.
How Podcast Club Works
Similar to book club, the premise is that we meet and discuss podcasts. What has been the most successful for us is assigning a particular episode of a podcast that everyone listens to. Then we encourage people to listen to other episodes of the same podcast to also discuss. The assigned episode serves as a common place to begin the discussion, and the bonus episodes are easy ways to keep the conversation evolving.

Make Podcast Club Fun
Some of our best Podcast Club seasons have been when we’ve centered our podcasts around specific themes. Food. Self Improvement. Travel. Family. Consider including the theme when determining location.
One season our club’s theme was “Meet and Eat.” We agreed to try new-to-us local restaurants every time we gathered. If arranging a meet-up at someone’s house, consider playing up the theme with snacks or attire.
Share the Love (and Responsibility)
When we decided to gauge the interest of a podcast club with our friends, we were intentional with throwing out the idea to our social media friends and just being okay with the most random group of people coming together.
Our bond would eventually become the love of talking about podcasts. We’ve all taken turns by choosing the podcast for next time and its assigned episode. Most of us have opened up our homes to welcome the group.

What I found in podcast club was more than I thought possible. This group helped weather the isolation of the pandemic. These women became the core group of friendships in my life. We began to celebrate birthdays and holidays together, and started annual traditions.
Podcast Club has turned into framily, and for that I’m so thankfuL.
