Based on the book by Lois Brandt, Maddi’s Fridge is a gentle yet sometimes hilarious exploration of friendship, empathy, and doing the right thing. One day Sofia discovers that her best friend Maddi has no food in her fridge at home. Sofia wants to help her friend, but Maddi makes her promise not to tell anyone. What should Sofia do?
I looked up Maddi’s Fridge on Goodreads (it gets great reviews), and here’s a little more about the story:
Best friends Sofia and Maddi live in the same neighborhood, go to the same school, and play in the same park, but while Sofia’s fridge at home is full of nutritious food, the fridge at Maddi’s house is empty. [The story] addresses issues of poverty with honesty and sensitivity while instilling important lessons in friendship, empathy, trust, and helping others.
So basically, I’ll cry, my kids will learn valuable life lessons, and we’ll be supporting local theater. Sign me up.

First up, Child at Heart will host a Teddy Bear Picnic before the performance of Maddi’s Fridge on October 13. Kids will get to stuff an animal with love and fluff to take home or donate to another child in need through the SWAGG program, a faith-based & family-oriented ministry that provides support to foster, adopted, and homeless children.
