In case you haven’t heard, Lower Greenville is not the same Lower Greenville you stumbled around in college. The seedy bars and tattoo parlors have seen quite a facelift in the last year and given way to new restaurants, a grocery store, a coffee shop, and dessert stops.
You might even be surprised to learn that Lower Greenville is now a great spot during the day…and the kids are more than welcome. When the weather is nice, restaurant patios fill with people and the street is pedestrian friendly as you walk from destination to destination.
1. Truck Yard – The outdoor food truck park is about as close as you are going to get to Austin while staying in North Texas. The atmosphere is laid back enough to allow for the kids to play and fill up on grub from rotating food trucks while you grab a beer or craft cocktail to go with your own meal selection. Be sure to check out the Philly cheesesteaks served in the brick and mortar shop right when you walk into the yard. 5624 Sears St
2. Trader Joe’s – We chronicled 10 Reasons Why Every Mom Should Love Trader Joe’s last summer when the new Lower Greenville location opened up. Among our highlights: kid-sized grocery carts, samples galore, and hidden mascots to find in each store. 2001 Greenville Ave
3. Carnival Barker’s Ice Cream – Located outside the entrance to the Truck Yard, Carnival Barker’s offers homemade ice cream centered around unique flavors like banana pudding and peanut butter with chocolate covered potato chips. Other treats include ice cream floats and frozen bananas. My son’s favorite part? The nostalgic helicopter parked outside the ice cream stand. 5624 Sears St
4. Steel City Pops – Brand-new from Birmingham, Alabama, this popsicle store recently opened its first Texas store and plans to open more in the metroplex soon. With 100+ degree summers, I’m not sure why we don’t have more shops like these where customers can pick pops flavors sourced locally, all-naturally and organic. Imagine flavors like strawberry-balsamic, blueberry-basil, and avocado. (For the less adventurous, you can find blood orange, caramel, and coconut.) Families can even watch the pops being made at Steel Pops’ open kitchen before enjoying them on the family-friendly front patio. 2012 Greenville Ave
5. Crisp Salad Co. – We featured this new salad spot in our Healthy Family Friendly Restaurant list recently. We are a fan because Crisp Salad Company, caters to families with kids options on their menu. Kids can enjoy “KidsDippers”, sliced grilled chicken that can be dipped into your choice of sauce and served with grapes, celery sticks, and carrots. Another option is the “KidsWrap”, where children can choose their own protein and veggie to be wrapped up into a tortilla alongside grapes, celery sticks, and carrots. 2020 Greenville Ave
Have you been to Lower Greenville lately? If not, maybe it’s time to pack up the family and give it another try!
