Like most parents with a child about to enter kindergarten, I want to make sure my daughter is as prepared as she can be on that first day. She is enrolled in a wonderful pre-k program, but I am always looking for ways to work with her at home. I have specifically been looking for ideas to keep her engaged and continue learning through the summer. I want to strengthen the foundational skills she has learned in pre-k in a fun and enjoyable way.
I was thrilled when I learned about a series of preschool workbooks from Inquisitive called the Little Kids Book of BIG Ideas. Inquisitive believes that all parents should be empowered with high-quality tools for furthering the brain development of their little ones. Their products are created using methods that have been proven to be successful in an intimate, one-on-one setting.
There are four books in the preschool series with topics ranging from Mathematical Reasoning, Analogies, Verbal Reasoning as well as Patterns, Puzzles & Sequences. These books were created based off the same cognitive activities required for entrance exams to private schools and gifted programs, however the brain-building activities are great for all kids in that age range and are very fun, too!
I sat down with my preschooler and got to work in the Verbal Reasoning book. She immediately wrote her name on the first page and commented on how pretty and colorful the pages were. I had to agree, the pages were well-designed. I liked the guide at the front of the book that gave me tips on how to work through the book in a productive and enjoyable way with her. Each page is simple with just a couple problems or questions to solve, so it lets us work at a pace that is good for her. It didn’t overwhelm her and as soon as she stopped showing interest, we took a break.
Her favorite activity was in the Verbal Reasoning book and it happened a few pages in, with a cutting, sorting and pasting activity. The rest of the afternoon she was pointing out things in the house that were above, in-between and below something else – directly from the concepts we had just worked on. I could feel the confidence she felt in her self and I can’t wait to keep working through our workbooks together.
To her, this was a fun and quiet activity she was doing with mommy and to me, I felt like I had the right tools to work with her at home.

The verbal reasoning book sounds the most interesting to me. I like the idea of helping my child articulate herself more clearly and it sounds like this would be a fun way to do that.
Oh this sounds super interesting. I would love this for L.
Verbal Reasoning for sure. My son is great at math problems and numbers, but when it comes to working through things verbally he has a harder time. I think this would help him a great deal yet be fun at the same time.
Great books love the patterns puzzles and sequencing.
My daughter would really benefit from the math reasoning book.
We would love to try the verbal reasoning! All the books sound amazing and helpful though
I think I like the math one, but heck, all of them sound wonderful!
All of them sound awesome! Verbal Reasoning stands out to me.
I would love the math and the puzzle one! 🙂 All of them seem great.
Patterns, puzzles and sequencing sounds fun!
