Now it’s time for a day in the life of part-time working momma, Amanda. Find out how her days normally go with her husband, 2 year old son, and crazy puppy in their one room loft in Downtown Dallas.
.………………………………………………………………………………………..……………………………………..
3:00 AM — Some nights Miles wakes up in his own bed and realizes that he is alone (and not in Mommy and Daddy’s bed) so he cries and one of us goes to retrieve him and bring him in bed with us. Other nights he is already in bed with us and this is around the time I receive my first kick to the head. How did his foot get up that high?
5:45 AM — I get a few more kicks that wake me up just 15 minutes before my alarm goes off. I lay in bed thinking that I might as well just get up and shower, but too tired to actually get up.
6:09 AM — Shoot, must have snoozed through that first alarm! Up and racing Tony to the shower. He got up with his alarm, so he’s already won. Start the Keurig, fold a load of laundry and find workout clothes in the dark. Since we live in a one room loft and Miles is asleep in our bed we have to keep the lights off while we get ready so he can stay asleep.
6:45 AM –Turn on lights, make coffee, and pour Miles a chocolate milk while Tony gets him up and receives the first snuggles of the day. Tony gets Miles dressed while I make us some breakfast and coffees to go. Lately I’ve been on a breakfast smoothie kick. I’ll be honest – I mostly do it so I can keep seeing Miles do this! He does it every time I turn on the blender!!
6:55 AM — Head down elevator to the garage carrying Miles, my purse, workout bag, and laptop bag. Feel like superwoman. (EDIT: FELT like superwoman until I read this post by Heather!) Head over to my best friend’s house to drop off Miles.
7:30 AM — Drop Miles off with Lyndsay and her boys where she spoils him with hugs and kisses and anything he asks for while he plays a game of “GO” chasing her 4 year old all around their house. I hear he alternately harasses their cat (he can’t understand why he can sit on the dog but not the cat!) and tries to stick various items in his belly button.
7:45 AM — Make it to work at Ultimate Pilates where I get to teach 3 (sometimes 4) Pilates classes a day — on very intimidating (but super fun) Pilates machines. I couldn’t love my job more!
11:15 AM –Done with work for the day and I either get to pick Miles up early, run errands, stick around to do a workout at the noon class, or have lunch with Tony!! Some days I teach the noon class so every day is different and I have to keep a schedule on my phone to know where I’m supposed to be on any given day!
1:30 PM — Picking up Miles from Lyndsay usually takes no less than 20 to 30 minutes. We chat while Miles keeps playing with all the fun toys. He takes me around and tells me (in his own baby-language that only he can understand) all the fun things he got to do that day. Lyndsay usually has a few pictures and videos of all the hilarity that ensued while he was there.
2:00 PM –Miles falls asleep while we are driving home. I quietly take him up and put him in bed hoping he’ll stay asleep on his own for at least another 30 minutes so I can eat a quick bite for lunch and straighten up the kitchen.
3:00 PM –Miles wakes and realizes that I’m not snuggling him. So I have to hug him back to sleep and snuggle with him for another hour. What a rough life! Usually I can turn on the TV and he stays asleep — so I catch up on Chelsea Lately while checking Facebook and Twitter and reading blogs and emails on my iPad, with a baby on my lap.
4:00/4:30 PM — Miles is up and we take Rocky (the puppy with way too much energy) to our super secret spot a block away where we can let him off the leash to run. I make sure to take a few drinks (and snacks) because it’s still SO hot outside. I spend about 15/20 minutes trying to alternately wrangle Miles from escaping and entertain the dog. Then we head home to start dinner.
5:00 PM –I’m supposed to be starting dinner, but I’m usually procrastinating by playing trains with Miles and cleaning up around the loft.
5:30 PM –Unless it’s Tuesday (when we get the big kids for the evening) or Wednesday (when Tony teaches Pilates in the evening) Daddy’s home and I still haven’t started dinner. Oh well, at least now I don’t have to cook alone!
5:45 PM –Play with Miles while Tony cooks (I’ll cook tomorrow… maybe). Then we try to sit down for dinner. Miles sits for about 2 seconds then is up running around. I’m chasing him and trying to make him eat at least a few bites of anything healthy. I fail. Tony finishes eating so he takes over feeding Miles while I eat.
7:00 PM –It’s still light out so we all go for a walk to Belo Garden to let Miles play in the fountains and let Rocky sniff other dogs. I really don’t want summer to end!!
7:45 PM — Head home to give Miles a bath and clean up kitchen. Pour glass of wine, turn on some music and play with Miles in the tub while checking emails and Facebook.
8:30 PM — Relax and watch some TV with my husband while Miles plays with his trains. Spend half the time relaxing and the other half chasing Miles around and around the train table or running back and forth across the loft with Miles in his truck so that he can get good and tired for bed!
9:30 PM — One of us lays down with Miles in his room to put him to sleep. We usually take turns. For some reason, no matter what we do — who ever lays down with Miles ends up falling asleep.
10:00 PM — Wake up SO (or get woken up by him) so we can relax together for 30 minutes to an hour (however long our eyes will stay open) before going to bed. Put in load of laundry.
11:00 PM — Miles wakes up realizing that he’s alone and if we are almost ready for bed we all just snuggle in together for the night. My favorite way to fall asleep is with chubby baby arms wrapped around my neck anyway…
Supermom is all about doing the best you can with however many you got!! And, sounds like you’ve got it down, cold!! 🙂 Great post!
