Grandparent’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of September every year. If you’re lucky enough to have grandparents nearby, take this opportunity to do something special with them that weekend. It doesn’t matter how you celebrate — spending time together is what’s most important. Here are nine ways to celebrate Grandparent’s Day in Dallas.

1. Dallas Arboretum

The Dallas Arboretum near White Rock Lake is always a fun outing for grandparents. Wander the flower gardens, play in the children’s garden, and enjoy a tour of DeGolyer House. Tours are offered both Saturday and Sunday of Grandparent’s Day weekend.

2. Dallas World Aquarium

Visit the sloth and venture through the shark tunnel at The Dallas World Aquarium. There aren’t any special events scheduled for Grandparent’s Day, but this world class aquarium is fascinating for all ages. There are several food options inside, too, so you can make a whole day of this outing.

3. Dallas Zoo

My family loves going to the Dallas Zoo any chance we get, and taking grandparents makes it even better! The zoo is a perfect family outing for all ages. Some of our favorite zoo activities include the carousel, the reptile house (this also offers a break from the heat), and feeding the giraffes.

4. Farmers Market

Invite your grandparents to join you at one of the many amazing farmers markets in and around Dallas. After you pick out some tasty ingredients and flowers for a fresh bouquet, go home and cook an amazing brunch together with your grandparents.

5. Grandest Friends Day

Highland Hills Library is hosting “Grandest Friends Day” on Saturday, September 7, from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. This event will offer crafts and photo opportunities for children and grandparents.

6. Grandparents Day Brunch

FMC Midlothian is hosting a grandparents’ brunch with its Creation Kids children’s ministry. The event will be Saturday, September 14, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Join for brunch, legacy cards, and photo opportunities. Registration is required.

7. School Events

Several elementary schools host events for Grandparent’s Day, such as breakfast or lunch. Be sure to check your school’s calendar, as well as the PTA calendar, to see what your school might offer this year.

8. Sea Dragon Safari Boat Rides

Take your grandparents on a new adventure at the Dallas Children’s Aquarium. Sea dragon safari boat rides are open daily in the Fair Park lagoon across from the aquarium. There are two-person and four-person boats available to ride from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., with the last boat ride at 4:30 p.m. Tickets for the 20-minute rides are available at the lagoon dock. Free parking is available at the aquarium. Tickets to the aquarium are sold separately.

9. Visit Grandparents

Perhaps you have grandparents that are homebound. If they live in an assisted or community living facility, check the event calendar for special programming that weekend. If not, bring a board game or puzzle, and enjoy some time with them in their homes.

I hope you take this opportunity to celebrate your child’s grandparents on Grandparent’s Day this year.
