Are you like me and enjoy any reason for a celebration? Or, maybe the end of summer has got you down, and you could use a little excitement! Well grab the kids, and your beloved pooch, because August 26th is National Dog Day, and I have 5 fun ways to “paw-ty” with your kids and pup!
1. Make Homemade Dog Treats
There are a ton of recipes on Pinterest for homemade dog treats and “Pup-cakes”. Here are a couple that look foolproof:
Choose one for you and the kids to try, get in the kitchen and bake! You could even throw in a batch of cookies at the same time so that you and the kids have a treat to enjoy too. If you want to up the cuteness factor, check out these adorable bone-shaped cookie cutters on Amazon.

2. Exercise Together
Take the kids and your dog to explore a new park or walking trail! Be sure to bring plenty of water for you, the kids, and your pup, because after all, we are in the “Dog Days of Summer!” (Check out one of these cool Pet Water Bottles on Amazon.) Your dog will love the exercise and quality time together.
3. Pooch Portrait
Have your kids get creative and draw a portrait of your dog. Not only will it be a fun activity that keeps the kids entertained for a while, but it can also be a fun keepsake! Frame the drawings or turn them into any number of keepsake items with the help of Shutterfly or other gift websites. I love the deck of cards, memory game, and puzzle! 4. Plan a Photoshoot with your Pup
I took our dog, Stella, along with us to our family photos a couple years back, and I am so glad I did! We got the most precious photos that I will cherish forever! Hire a photographer who is comfortable working with pets to snap some photos of your dog playing with your family. Or head to a local park with your phone and take your own photos.
**Note: It might be helpful to bring along some dog treats to help your pup focus on the camera.
5. Donate food and supplies to a local shelter
Sadly, not all dogs have loving homes. If you are looking for a way to help this National Dog Day, have your kids pick out dog food, toys, or other pet supplies to donate to a local shelter. Your kids will get involved in giving back to the community and you will make a lot of dogs happy!
