We love books, and my husband and I love reading with our children and listening to them read to us now that they’re old enough. We have lots of books but there are a few that are really popular in our home at the moment.
Here are 5 Books We are Reading and Loving Right Now
How the Unicorn Was Born by Charlotte Daniels, illustrated by Hanna Marks
My daughter adores unicorns and rainbows. She was browsing through books online one afternoon and saw this one and fell instantly in love. The book is about a foal born with a horn and the bully bull who tries to make her feel bad for being different. The foal’s mom stands up for her, and the foal learns throughout the book to work hard, accept failure as part of the process, and grow. There are themes of acceptance, growth mindset, perseverance, and friendship in this rhyming book.
I am Rosa Parks by Brad Meltzer, illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos
One day my son breathlessly ran up to me and said, “Mom, we read a book in Library about Rosa Parks and it was illustrated like Xavier Riddle. Can you find that book and buy it, so we can have it at home?” My answer is almost always going to be yes when my children ask for books, especially when they are so excited about them. I soon discovered that this book is part of the Ordinary People Change the World series and is, indeed, from the same people who make Xavier Riddle on PBS. My son has read the entire book aloud to all of us and it has brought about some great discussions about the importance of standing up for what is right.
This book is both timely and timeless. I ordered it as soon as it came out. The author is Emerson Weber. If the name sounds familiar it’s because Emerson’s love of letter writing went viral after she wrote a thank you note to her mail carrier, Doug. Her letter was shared in a USPS internal newsletter and soon Emerson was getting letters from postal workers all over. Her inspiring book is about taking time to notice all the helpers in the world and to practice gratitude.
I Am a Super Girl! by Kelly Greenawalt, illustrated by Amariah Rauscher
My daughter adores the Princess Truly books and I Am a Super Girl! is by far her favorite. She has read this book aloud to everyone who will listen approximately one zillion times. It’s one of the books I got to encourage her to love her curls. The first time we read it, she said, “Oh! I have curly hair too!” She’s campaigning pretty hard to get a pug just like Princess Truly has too. The big message in this book (besides how cool it would be if we had a pug) is that “brave comes from the heart.” It is sweet and empowering.
Big Ideas for Curious Minds from The School of Life Press
This book is an introduction to philosophy. Children are naturally curious and mine loved this book. They were so sad when we were near the end of it that I ordered more books on philosophy for young readers. Big Ideas lives up to its title and introduces readers to philosophers from Socrates to Ibn Sina to Ralph Waldo Emerson and Simone de Beauvoir. It uses simple language, helpful examples and some small exercises with topics such as Maybe You Are Just Tired, Politeness Matters, Good Things Are (Unexpectedly) Hard, and Why Grown-up Life Is Hard, along with several others. There are 26 ideas with an introduction to a philosopher and their view regarding the idea at the end of each chapter. As someone who enjoys studying philosophy and learning, it gave me so much joy to see my children have aha moments as I read this book to them each night.
I hope you and your young readers love these books as much as we do.
