10 Best 90s Movies to Watch with Your Kids, Tweens, and Teens

When I was your age…

Has there ever been a kid who didn’t roll her eyes at the utterance of those words?

My 4 girls are no exception.

I spent my high school and college years in the 90s, and I am forever regaling them with tales of how different things were back then.

Getting a good seat to a concert meant waiting for hours in line outside of a Ticketmaster location. Getting on the Internet meant listening to the shrill beeps and static of a dial-up modem, praying you would be rewarded with “You Got Mail” 10 minutes later. The thrill of getting the last copy of a VHS movie at Blockbuster.

And high fashion meant plaid, lots of plaid, bodysuits, and baby doll dresses. Sometimes all 3 at the same time.

While they won’t be modeling the grunge look, they do love some of my favorite 90s movies.

Here are our Family’s Top Ten 90s Movies for Kids

Word of caution. Don’t rely on your memory of when you first saw these movies to determine whether or not the movie is age-appropriate for your kids. Trust me, you’re not going to remember the bad stuff. I learned this the hard way when I started to watch The Breakfast Club with my 14-year-old. Totally forgotten just how R rated the dialogue was. 1. Babe (G, 1995) Babe, a pig raised by sheepdogs, learns to herd sheep with a little help from the Farmer.
2. A Little Princess (G, 1995) Based on the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, a World War I era fairy tale about a girl who is relegated to servitude at her posh boarding school after her father goes missing in action and is presumed dead.
3. Baby’s Day Out (PG, 1994) Adorable Baby Bink gets to live out his favorite storybook after he escapes from 3 bumbling kidnappers.
4. Cool Running (PG, 1993) One of my favorite underdog movies, it’s about the Jamaican Olympic Bobsled team’s quest for respect and glory at the Winter Olympics.
5. Home Alone (PG, 1990) An eight-year-old defends his home from burglars after his parents accidentally leave him home alone at Christmas.
6. A League of Their Own (PG, 1992) There’s no crying in baseball. 2 sisters join the first professional women’s baseball league during World War II.
7. The Parent Trap (PG, 1998) Remake of a 60s classic. Twin sisters separated after their parents’ divorce find each at summer camp. They scheme to reunite their parents and wacky twin hijinks occur. Did I mention Lindsey Lohan played both parts?
8. Clueless (PG-13, 1995) A 90s retelling of Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma, Clueless tells the story of Beverly Hills rich kid Cher’s attempts to negotiate higher grades on her report card by making a love match between 2 of her teachers. As if!
9. Jurassic Park (PG-13, 1993) For your dinosaur-loving kiddos, the original captures the magic and awe of a themed park full of actual dinosaurs.
10. Mrs. Doubtfire (PG-13, 1993) Robin Williams at his absolute best. After a bitter divorce, an actor disguises himself as a female housekeeper to spend time with his children.
